Finding a layout article
Posted by DAVID HAISELL on Sunday, January 15, 2023 1:16 PM

Hi there!

I'm on the search for an old layout tour article from the 90s, or maybe 80s. What stood out to me was that the owner had a working train ferry that tooled back and forth in a waterproofed section of waterfront. Have struck out in the archives so far; I wondered if it rang a bell for anyone.

It does not ring a bell with me.

I do not remember any layout tour with an automated car ferry.

I recently discovered the best source of finding old model railroad articles.

It is easily searchable.  Good luck!

I don't recall such an article, but I do remember, somewhere, reading about a MRer who had a water-filled harbor scene where the the ferry went between two docks guided by submerged tracks. While it was a grand plan, it caused the humidity in the basement to be excessive, so filling the harbor with water became a rare event.

I do remember an article in MR, within the past 7 years (?) where the ferry was mounted on a large (6 ft diameter?) turntable so the ferry could be rotated between the apron and the distant destination that was hidden staging. It took up a lot of space, but it was certainly a signature feature on the layout.

Real water sounds like a horrible idea.  Ever have a fish tank?  It gets algea growing it.

I just plan to swap out the freight cars on my ferry between operations.

Drawers will work well.

This is the only thing that rang a bell, well at least it was a dull thud!!!
