FWD: where can I get HOn3 MDC(or else) kits
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, January 26, 2005 2:53 PM
I posted this question in 'general discussion of trains' of the forum but was advised to put it here.

I am new to this forum and want to build a HOn3 trains and layout. The problem is that in Europe this cannot be ordered easily. In the past I bought MDC roundhouse kits form a local distributor which seased to exist, Does anyone know about a distributor which has a good product list of HOn3 products, and sends this to Europe? I am particularly interested in kits like MDC has. However, as replied to me and read somewhere in this forum, MDC is Athearn now? Does it still exist? Are there any other brands which build kits like that?

kind regards, ***.

Rumor has it that Athearn will no longer be issuing any of the Roundhouse rolling atock as kits. But they didn't have any HOn3 rolling stock anyway. As for their HOn3 engine kits, It's going to take a LONG time for Athearn to finish sorting out the hundreds of pallet's worth of MDC stuff they ended up with, and longer still before they decide to issue any (and those will probably be as RTR). The rumor mill says that Athearn will PROBABLY release the MDC engines as kits as well, but who knows how many years down the road THAT will be.

***, do a search on the Walthers website for HOn3 freight cars (they don't stock any HOn3 passenger cars). I did a search and came up with 70 line items by 10 different manufacturers. Kits were in resin, plastic, and wood. Do an online search for LaBelle; they've got craftsman wood passenger car kits in HOn3. Both Shinohara and Micro Engineering have HOn3 track lines.

Ebay is probably the best place to get HOn3 equipment, since it's sort of an underground scale. You're not guaranteed new, high-quality stuff however.

one of the best places for narrow gauge info is the "Narrow Gauge abd Short Line Gazette" , a bi-monthly magazine . i don't model narrow gauge but i occasionally buy a copy because the quality of the modelling is always very high , lots of great photos

I found an ad in NGSL Magazine from Rittech SA,a Swiss supplier of American models. Here is a kink to their website www.rittech.ch/ Joe G. Oops,I just checked that site and most of their merchandise is expensive brass.

Wow, this forum is more frequently visited than I expected, I had to go back 7 pages ..

Ok, thanks for the replies. I am quite aware that it is an underground scale, probably another thing I kind'a like about it... The eBay advise is probably not going to work for me, since I live in The Netherlands. Buying something overseas is hard as it is, buying second hand is even harder. I'll have a look anyway since you'll never know. I hope Athearn continues making the kits. I can live with the fact that it will take some time, because I still have got a Shay to finish.. I like the kit building and kit-bashing which is done in the US, this is not common in Europe. They like to poli***heir models, not giving it a natural look, either.

I'll try to get the NGLS gazette but am pessimistic about it. To get it into perspective, MR, the most well-know US train magazine here, is only available in big cities.

The Rittech site is very nice, the prices are not! The Climax of 3950 Swiss Franks is actually an anti-climax... Who are they selling to???? Not your average forum visitor. It is nice though to look at the different types of loco's this easy and fast, since they're alll together.

Thanks again. If I find something new: quote : 'I'll be back' ; unquote.

regards, ***.
