Power supply Called "HOGGER"
Posted by rrlineman on Saturday, December 17, 2022 2:19 PM

Good afternoon all. Have a question. A older customer of mine who runs S-scale called me and said his power supply stopped working. It's called a Hogger and he wants me to look at it. The only ones I found are in the HO secton of eBay and they all appear to be sealed (rivets). Has anyone ever repaired them ? I found that a company named Star Enterprises made it at 1 point but failed to fine it in a GOOGLE searh. Is it still being made? Thanks in advance.

I recall hearing of the Hogger some years ago, but a quick search offered a description of the device, by someone who is selling one on e-bay...

STARR-TEC HOGGER WALK-AROUND MODEL RAILROAD CONTROLLER

This is a Model 100MW Model RR control unit that is new in original box.  Features 6 Amp output,walk-aroundcontroller, momentum switch and manual.  The MW series of power packs were designed to operate all of the standard DC Gauge model trains.

The output voltage is high enough for "G" scale and the output voltage waveform is delicate enough for "N" scale.

The power pack weighs 6 lbs and measures 8"L X 5"W X3" high.

It's not terribly difficult to drill-out rivets, in order to get at the innards, but you'd have to know where to look for the cause of the problem.  My guess that it's some small electrical component, hopefully easy to locate and also hopefully with replacement parts still available.
If you can repair it, you can probably re-assemble the outer steel casing using pop rivets and the tool associated with them....I've built and repaired a number of things using pop rivets.

I'm not sure why the first portion of the ad was garbled, so I removed the rest of the  E-bay ad, and then re-typed the sellers description of the device.

Hoggers were not as reliable as MRC when they hit the market but they had a lot going for them otherwise in a cost vs features menu.

I never heard this.

Three of the four Hoggers we installed on Randy's N scale Norfolk Southern layout are still working just fine... almost thirty years later.

Admittedly, My exposure to the product is limited beyond that one layout.

I remember them as being advertised fairly heavily in MR at the time, but never saw them for sale at hobby shops and knew nobody who had one.

Back then it was still important to have market penetration in actual brick and mortar hobby shops; I don't think they had that, certainly not to the extent MRC had.

I have one of those, used it before DCC, never really liked it, but maybe mine wasn't working correctly.  Couldn't get the monentum and braking right, so I put it away.

Still have it in it's original box, stored under the layout.

The MRC's that I bought to replace it worked much better.

Bought one in the early 80's. Used it a number of years and had no problem. When I moved in 1988 and built my current layout I bought 4 MRC CM20 power supplies. The Hogger is stored in like new condition as a "backup ".

I've had the Starr-Tec Hogger for years - DC throttle with tethered controller.
