Motor SD 70 Ace - M.T.H. scale Ho
Posted by escalibur2 on Sunday, June 5, 2022 4:43 PM

Greetings,

I need to replace the engine of a SD 70 Ace n ° 8444 (purchased in 2009) of M.T.H scale HO. I sent the request by email to the Company communicating the number of the spare part but I never got a reply. I'm looking for help where you can find the spare!

I also have another Athearn Genesis SD 70 Ace and was wondering if the

its engine may also be suitable for the MTH model.

Greetings and thanks to all

Carlo

You might wish to contact ScaleTrains.  I think that they bought the HO line from MTH.  (and if it wasn't ScaleTrains someone please correct me!)

Do you have the box it came in? The instructions should have a help-line number on them somewhere.

ATSFGuy

May not get a quick answer as MTH closed up shop about a year ago. I believe Scale Trains bought much of the HO inventory and perhaps production equipment.

Good Luck, Ed

[edit] I had not seen Maxman's reply above when I posted my reply. Duplicate information. Embarrassed

The model was built in 2009 and the indications for spare parts support etc have changed. However, if Scale Trains did not have the replacement engine, I think I have found a solution.

Scale Train ET 44 Tier locomotives have an identical engine in size. With appropriate modifications, I will have the SD 70 ACe resume racing. In the meantime, thanks to: maxman, ATSFGuy and gmpullman for the help!

With sympathy

Carlo, ciao

The only way the athearn motor will work id based on a couple things

1. The motor from end to end needs to be the same length from flywheel face to flywheel face.

2. The mount from the scaletrains motor will likely have to be put on the athearn motor. This will probably require the removal of said flywheels to get the motor mounts off.

3. The width of the motor has to match to fit in the space provided in th frame.

Athearn motors generally usable across a wide range of locos. You can also take measurements of the motor with a caliper and see if you can find a cheaper replacement online. This of course is only necessary if scaletrains cant help you. They should have what you need but, just expressing some options.

Thanks Santafejeff for your information, when I have completed the repairs, I will make a video on my YouTube channel (Carlo Spada) on the processing steps to get the SD 70 ACe back to racing.

A cordial greeting

Carlo, ciao
