Happy Fathers Day to all you Dads out there. My Daughters are coming over around noon to take me to Cold Stone for an ice cream treat today.
CNCharlie TF, I love marmalade on toast but am very fussy about the marmalade. Get some Robertson's that comes from Scotland. It is far better than the domestic stuff that I find is far too sweet.

That sure is a neat picture! They all were, Thanks for posting. I had to refresh my memory from the pictures of that steam engine I took in St Louis Park 3 years ago. I guess it didn't dawn on me visiting in it's engine shed yesterday, that was 261 back then too.

We make our own marmalade... Orange, Cherry, Peach, Rsapberry... They are all 80% Zuchinni. : ) But they taste just great! (ROAR)

Man that sounds good and really healthy too. Judy and I make homemade lasagna in the fall and use zucchini and spaghetti squash in layers instead of pasta to change things up. We bake it right in the rinds. That dish is really moist and rather delicious as well

Father's Day. I know I've posted this before, but it's one of the few I have. For years, this locomotive sat on a siding by our small town's airport. We loved it because it was open, and we could climb into the cab and touch all the controls and dials.
My father is standing guard to make sure my little brother doesn't fall. I'm the one way at the top with my pants pulled up to my neck -- a nerd in the making.
Dave, my father also did not receive any physical wounds, but the war bothered him. He helped liberate a concentration camp, and I think that affected him his whole life. While waiting in England to cross the channel, he loved taking leave and traveling to see Scotland. He said it was the most beautiful place.
What a great generation of people. As teens, they survived the Depression, then fought and won the huge war, then came back and built the world into modern times. I'm afraid even I don't have the backbone, stamina, and bravery to do what they did.

Wow! Sounds like touch sensor stoves is a really bad idea John. Judy and I have a house rule and I have to remind her sometimes. Nothing gets set on the stove, just in case better safe than sorry.

Good Morning,
A hot day here at least for us. It is 85F right now headed for 99. The humidex is already 97. They cancelled the Marathon race an hour after it started. It starts and ends at the uni which is only a mile from us. We can't get out of our neighbourhood all day due to street closures. Personally running for miles has zero appeal to me. The heat is coming on a south wind that is supposed to end on Tuesday. It isn't hot in our basement where I largely dwell. With the AC on it is about 65F even with the vents off. I had the baseboard heater on in my bedroom last night.
Plan on grilling some prime rib burgers tonight.
Nice out here on the patio now. Birds are singing. Think it is a house finch. Traffic is way down as they are busy nest building. A male piliated has been stopping by most days. I have a coffee at hand. Later it will be an iced espresso. We buy the premade stuff and do enjoy it. I don't like fizzy drinks.
Speaking of marmalade have you seen the Paddington Bear movies? Very well done. That short video with the Queen having tea with him was great.

Hello diners! Happy Father's Day!
Chloe, a grilled ham & cheese sandwich and a pepsi please.
Sad news on the baby blue jay front. My wife went out to cover him with an old towel last night as it was supposed to get cold overnight. He wasn't in the little spot in the tree. We grabbed flashlights and searched but he was hiding well. Then this morning there arose a terrible racket outside. Seems the baby came out of hiding and had made his way back by his tree when a crow spotted him. Despite a flock of blue jays attacking it, the crow nabbed the baby jay and made off with him. By the time I realized what was happening, it was too late to save it. Glad I'm the only one that saw it. My wife took the news much harder than my daughter did, which I thought was good for my kiddo. As much as she wants to help animals, she realizes that sometimes nature wins over what we want. That will serve her well as a veterinarian someday. You can't win 'em all.
Did a little work on my oldest daughter's car today. Nothing too painful so that was good. Heading to the in-laws house for dinner tonight. Hopefully something good.

Happy Father's day from the cool damp West Coast, at least the Province isn't burning up as in the past few years.
The kid and his GF took the two Dads to a Vancouver Canadians game last night, I believe they are a Blue Jays farm team, a good time was had by all. I was a little grossed out by those around me eating the three-foot-long hotdogs though. I did have a regular size one and three beers myself though. Haven't had a beer in a long time, but when in Rome.
Mike, sorry to hear about the baby bird, good effort though. Last week the wife noticed three of our dogs ( the girls ) sniffing something in the grass about 200' from the house. Not knowing what it was she called them and they came running back with it and proceeded to very gently place this baby bird on the door mat and looked up at my wife and said here ya go. It was quite fine and my wife was about to pick it up and find a safe spot for it near where the nest was. Just then our big male came bounding in and went cool and proceeded to grab it and ate it before the wife could blink an eye. Being a retriever, he was not supposed to do that. They catch and eat rabbits, however, they have always brought birds back completely unharmed. The wife was not impressed.

We always have the same rule TF. With our new kitchen, we now have an induction stove top so that is not a worry any longer but the rule will still be enforced.
John, sorry to hear of your storm damage, the last bad storm we had with a lot of damage was 14 years ago. We had seven huge trees come down that had to be removed, the largest was a good 6' in diameter. I remember coming home from work to it all, after a 14-hour all-nighter at the Airport where everything was also thrown into chaos because of the wind. I took a look around and went to bed. Bucking up those huge trees took weeks. It is hard work sawing a 6' diameter tree as it usually involves a lot of work with wedges and a sledgehammer. All seven trees were well over 100', the tallest was about 185'.
We just found out that two of my son's friends he grew up with just got married. They fell in love in kindergarten and were often found smooching under the teacher's desk or out behind the school. They were always the talk of the school the thirteen years they were there as they were inseparable. Great kids.
I've had three cups of coffee, played my guitar for two hours, and now I am off to the train room, it has been a while.

My Aunt Mary made marmalade using Seville oranges. It was incredible!! It was a bit on the bitter side but that was what made it so good. She also put lots of orange zest into it, unlike most of the commercial stuff that is offered today.
Dianne and I have never made jams but we have friends who do. Last fall we were given a small jar of wild blueberry jelly that was one of the most delicious things we have ever had! Maybe it tasted so good because the blueberries were picked in a Provincial Park where picking them is illegal.

The company sprung for pizzas for everyone for Father's Day.
I know the sight of all you can eat free pizza would gross out some of the people here, but I appreciated the gesture and did enjoy some. I don't see any point to not enjoying pizza. It had been a long time since I had delivery pizza, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. There were four varieties they provided, cheese, pepperoni, sausage & onion, and supreme. All were enjoyed.
All three of my babies called me during work hours to wish me happy father's day. I answered all three calls and felt pretty happy about it.
One of the girls I work with wanted a suggestion for what to get her dad for Father's Day. I said she should give him what he really wants. I told her she should go home, sit on the couch, and ask him to watch The Godfather with her. Then she should ask some questions, let him talk and explain the movie the whole way through, and then when it is over she should thank him for all the great commentary.
One of the customers at the counter overheard me say this, and he said that if his daughter did that he would feel like the luckiest dad ever.
I will find out tomorrow if she did it.

Great idea. Last year my kids were both here and out of the blue, said "Dad let's watch", "The Wrath of Kahn" after dinner (my favourite movie). It was the best, something so simple meaning so much. Another time I got taken golfing. Both my kids are good golfers and were on the High school golf team and one Father's day took me to a really snooty golf course and it was down to the wire with the competition, Came home to a prime rib dinner with lots of rum and Pepsis coming my way. They should have given me those before the golf and they might have had a chance.
Spent the day in the train room, how can you beat that?

It's another hot day today -- 103°. I have one more large tree branch to cut up and move, and then I will be done. I'll try to do that in a few minutes from now before it gets too hot.
I don't know if it's age or air-conditioning, but the hot weather bothers me much more now than it did years ago. Grouchy old age probably.
Kevin, that was an amazing thing you told your young co-worker to do. Just think of the good feelings you gave to someone eles. Very satisfying.

Brent, that's great your kids learned to golf. My daughters all learned to golf on the high school team, and it has been helpful in their work. Lots of business decisions seem to be made on the golf course.

Nice right now on the patio. High of 80F today which is a lot better than the 99 of yesterday. Reminded me of the weather when we went to Borneo. We were in the Malaysian part, Sarawak and Saba. An amazing trip but I couldn't take the heat and humidity anymore. Have a great photo of my wife with a baby orangatan in her arms. Little Doris didn't want to let go. Had to gently pull her little fingers off. We were the only tourists at the refuge that day so the vet was really nice to offer that photo.
Weird, 2 mallard male ducks just landed in the yard walked about for a couple of minutes and then flew off.
Brit Dave, hope the meds do the trick. My wife gets has pain in her knees and back so the gardening is getting hard for her. I told her she needs to cut back next year. She planted over 90 pots with flowers and also some in the ground. My joints are holding up so far and at 74 I count myself lucky.
Saw an add yesterday for an Abbott 22 sailboat at a very good price. I want it but then realized my age and that it was 1980 when I bought mine. An absolutely beautiful boat to sail, fast, responsive, but not scittish. Great in rough seas. I guess my memories will have to surffice.

John, I love anchovies. A lot of places will put them on the side on a small plate so we can add to our slices to suit our tastes.
Kevin, we had pizza in Venice when we visited in 1988 so the do serve it in Italy. I remember it was an outdoor place beside a canal. I had a gorgonzola cheese pizza. I like blue cheese but it was too much even for me. Good thing we were outside as my wife said it smelled awful but she hates blue cheese. I like a nice bit of stilton especially with port after a roast lamb dinner. Has never happened at our house only at friends in the UK. Guess I will just add that to the memory file along with the Abbott sailboat.

What I meant was the bread, sweet tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni staple we serve so frequently over here is not actually anything "traditional" from Italy.
Don't know for sure, just something I have heard often.
Today was interesting at work. From 6:00 to 10:00 we did not have a single spanish speaking employee in the store. That was a disaster. We managed to get through, and I think nearly all the customers got what they needed.
I hope that never happens again.
I really should study spanish.
The young lady I advised for the perfect father's day gift was so happy today. She said when the movie was over she told her father he was the best dad any little girl ever had. She said he hugged her like has hasn't hugged her since she was 12 years old.
He said she made his day perfect.
I am going to make my way to bed for hopefully another great night of sleep.
