Congratulation!

I noticed today that there are videos missing on the bridge build part of the thin branch series that was done back in 13'. Could they be uploade? Thanks

Congratulations, Eric.

It is a job that requires a 'thick skin' at times.  A job that will not please everyone  every time.  A job that must please everyone some of the time.  Have articles that cater for the new,  some that think they know  and something that we would like to achieve.   Simple ideas  can and do make great layouts.    Do that and you are a winner.   I wish you well.

Eric Congratulations

I met Eric in 2014 when he showed me around Kalmbach offices in Wisconsin.

Eric, congratulations on your appointment! You have your work cut out for you, but I look forward to seeing your positive influence on the magazine and the website.

Cheers!!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Congratulations, Eric.

I'll echo the sentiments that MR needs to focus on model railroading as a fun hobby for everyone.  There are dozens of websites, youtube channels, electronic magazines, social media platforms, etc. that focus on realism and fidelity to prototype.  Not that there is anything wrong with that focus (as that is where I aspire to be) but I am a model railroader first and foremost to have fun.  It is a hobby, a stress reliever, and something to share with both friends and beginners to the hobby.

I know this an unusual criticism, but the magazine has been way to focused on making model trains look way too real

Bravo, Kevin. I'm glad you ventured to voice this seldom-spoken opinion. I have regularly skipped over whole articles about yet more stunning weathering technique. It's so far away from where I am right now. I want to read about how to think through a layout plan in a tight space so that you don't end up with all curves and nowhere to put a straight siding or a water tower. Wiring DC blocks. Subroadbed considerations. Soldering joints in long curves of flex track. No-punches-pulled reviews of products. Histories! Histories of tank car evolution, histories of model manufacturers and what their strengths and weakness were. The hobby is SO full of stuff to know! If MR asked me to write an article I would write about the particular mistakes I've made on my first layout, why I consider them mistakes, and what I'd do differently next time.

-Matt

EDIT: And, wow, how rude of me... Congratulations to Eric and to both magazines for finding great editors to step up!

Returning to model railroading after 40 years and taking unconscionable liberties with the SP&S, Northern Pacific and Great Northern roads in the '40s and '50s.

Someone needs to put the "Model" back in Model Railroader.

"Model" and "Fun" as well.

I know this an unusual criticism, but the magazine has been way to focused on making model trains look way too real, even with obvious digital enhancements.

From reading Eric's past articles, he seems to be very OK with models looking like models, and modelers having fun. This change could be very good for the magazine.

Well said, Kevin!  I agree 100%.  I especially hate the overdone and overworked photos.  Yuck!

This is good news.  I was strongly considering not renewing, but this might be the boost MR needs.  Someone needs to put the "Model" back in Model Railroader.

Congratulations!  I'm happy, also, to see that Kalmbach was able to back-fill Jim Wrinn's position from it's senior people without much difficulty, if not without some deep regret for Mr. Wrinn's untimely death.  Life goes on apace. Indifferent

Congratulations to Eric.

I have always enjoyed the articles he has written. I hope he leads the magazine into a "Model Railroading Is Fun" future.

Posted by Steven Otte on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 9:45 AM

Kalmbach Media Co. has named veteran editor and journalist Eric White as the new editor of MODEL RAILROADER, the nation’s largest-circulation magazine covering the model railroading hobby.

White succeeds Carl Swanson, who is moving to TRAINS Magazine, also published by Kalmbach Media.

White joined MR in 2014 as Associate Editor. A promotion to Senior Editor followed in 2020. He is looking forward to leading Kalmbach Media’s flagship magazine as it enters its 90th year of monthly publication.
