Who reads, or more importantly submits, classified print ads anymore?
That's why you won't subscribe anymore?
Even newspapers (remember those?) have a much smaller "classifieds" section now.
Nobody uses them. Not with FB, etc... Who wants to pay for an ad, that may or may not succeed, when FB, etc.... are free?
I don't subscribe to anything simply for ads, classified or not.
(And this from a guy who refuses to use FB!)

The lack of classifieds both online and in print, along with the general degrading of the magainze to where its really nothing of substance when compared to what it was in the 70's thru the 90's is one reason I will NOT subscribe to it anymore. The current leadership of the publishing company have run the train off the tracks and off into the corn field. And its a shame and they should be embarrased. I will leave it at that. Lots of "other" places to buy and sell online, but like anything you cannot put your hands on and see before buying, buyer beware.

BATMAN There are some FB MRR buy/sell groups but there are too many horror stories on those for my liking. I would only buy if I could pick the item up in person. The FB groups seem to have lots of local participants so it is worthwhile belonging.

TrainBoard forum has a buy/sell section.

I frequent at least one other forum/site where provision is made for buying and selling model trains and associated items. They exist, but you have to google the subject and then look at several.
Whether it's historically based or just hedging of bets, our hosts are somewhat risk-averse when it comes to some possible topics, buying and selling included.

If you are looking for a forum where you can sell things and/or look for something you want, then you might try HOswap.io.
Costs nothing to join. They don't collect any fee. However, it is not an auction site. You determine how much you want for something and that's the price you offer.
If you are concerned about getting scammed, there is no protection such as provided by ebay. From what I can see, if that does happen it is infrequent.
However, I have purchased from people there and not had an issue. I have also responded to individuals looking for an item and completed a sale, also without issue.
It's interesting to read older (Pre 2000) issues of MR and see how much buying and selling went on in MR's classified ads -- and yes in many cases those ads competed with the advertisers who were paying full freight. I didn't think of the classifieds as cheap back then at the time, but I think they now are expensive enough that MR/Kalmbach have perhaps deliberately priced themselves out of the classified ad business for all practical purposes.
I guess it is true that there were rascals running some of those classified ads. The rascals they will always be with us

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.
I'll have to give you the long answer. No. I don't know the real reason why, but I can give it an educated guess. I don't think they would want to tick off their sponsors. Someone selling something instead of buying new. Plus dealing with bad actors cheating the buyer or the buyer wanting to return something that they broke. Too many hastles.
Pete.
