I think I can help you. I've been rebuilding Atlas/Rivarossi N Scale motors with all new armatures, custom-made neodymium ring magnets (that I had manufactured to fit the Rivarossi can, so we can all get rid of those horrid rubber "refrigerator" magnets), and new heavier brushes and brush springs. The armatures, brushes, and springs, I am harvesting from a decent 3-pole skew-wound motor I could buy in bulk to keep the costs down.
Attached below are some photos that tell the story. If interested, private message me through this forum. Price per motor is $30 - no postage in the continental US. I've done about 100 of these. They are rebuilt inside the original can so they just drop right back in, and they are far better and more durable than the original.
Cheers,
Max
I remember an N scaler in my club, this was back in the 1990s, remotored an N scale Rivarossi (ConCor) Pacific with an engine taken from an Atlas (Kato) GP7.
He was upset about the innacurate truck spacing on the Atlas model, and used the parts to fix his steamer. It ran great.

Living the dream.
Hey all!
I recently bought an old Atlas 4-6-2 Pacific to fix up and detail. Like a lot of them, the motor has gone bad (being built in 1968). I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to get some better n scale motors that I could put in there.
Dimensions are about 9/16" wide and 3/4" tall
I'm excited to get started on this project, the final plan is to turn it into a Great Northern locomotive with DCC, better pickups, and better details (more bells and whistles if you will). I do realize that it is not a split fram loco and I have some ideas how to get the pickup better on it.
