How big a space diagram do you need?
What is the size of your layout area?
How deep do you plan on making your shelves?

my layout is 13 feet long and is 18 inches wide along one wall only. on the end in the corner is a 3x4 section.

Well, if it is N, you can use the 3x4 space for a return loop easy. If you can kick other side a bit out, maybe stretch it 2 feet, you can make a tight loop and then can have a setup with full run around. If it is HO, my suggestion would be to use the 3x4 to make a yard, turn table maybe, and focus on lot of industry so you can do lots of switching and "daily work" Get hours of operating out of it.

Best Regards.

it's HO scale, and yes i was thinking of putiinh in a truntable on the 3x4 with other service tracks, having the rest of the layout as a branchline with spurs serving industry's

I would say use about 4 or 5 feet of that space near the engine service facility, as a small yard for interchange and storage. Then use the rest for industrial switching. If you have a copy of 101 Track Plans, there are a number of shelf style layouts, some could even be combined to fit your space.

Here is a shot of an overview of my shelf layout--the track plan should seem fairly straightforward:

And here's the yard section that is just beyond it--essentially, it is two six-foot sections. The yard is 1x6, the other section is L-shaped, 6 feet wide and is mostly 1 foot deep plus a 2x2 foot "island."

With the current setup I can build trains in the yard, then send them to the industrial area to switch freight in and out--further expansion is planned.
