I use Microsoft Access and created my own database. Most of the commercial programs I have seen are from Europe, so the pictures that are provided with the programs are of European rolling stock and engines.

http://www.gregorybraun.com/RRTrains.html -- it's a nice little freeware program that does a decent job of tracking locos and rolling stock.

Excel is my friend for that. I don't need pictures, because I only have a few hundred items and I can remember them all. Someday that may change, but not anytime soon.

I use a Microsoft Access database.
I can modify it to store any information needed.
It does require work to set it up though which may be a drawback for some though.
I can send it to anyone who wants to have a look at it, but you do need a copy of Access installed on your computer before you can "access" it.
Pun intended

I purchased a program called "collection master" from a seller on Ebay. It was cheap. Around 20 bucks if I recall. Upon purchase I was able to download it and use it right away. It serves me well. It has a template for model trains and it allows you to modify the fields to your own liking. Templates for other types of collections are on it too. You can add as many photos as you wish for each item. There are entries for price, date of purchase etc. It has a search feature that I use by road number to find particular items.

It is a stand alone program too. I copied it to a thumb drive and I can acess it from any computer to look at my collection.

I have seen other programs that are similar in features, but they all seem to be on ebay.
For me, this one is good.

Database/Catalog Software for Collection
Posted by wesleyl849 on Saturday, January 22, 2005 4:43 PM
I am looking for some good PC software to catalog my collection of rolling stock and accessories. Connecting pictures to the item is good. I want to track value and have several different sort methods (Road Name, value, Box car vs. Loco, etc)

Is there a standard or a favorite software package that individuals or clubs use?

Thanks!
