I enjoy "Danger Lights".

1930 and its hard to tell what is real and what is not.

Since, they could easily film vintage engines on site back in the 30s makes it even more exciting.

Re: The Little Rascals "Railroadin"

I didn't see this short until about 20 years ago when I bought a Little Rascals compilation set.  It was never shown on TV in the 50's and 60's probably because it would give kids the wrong idea that it was OK to hang round rail yards and jump on moving trains.

The first time I saw it is when I posted the clip here NYC.  It's nice they thought like that back then.  It certainly was a more wholesome time all around.  I can't even believe some of the junk they put on TV these days.

My wife likes the Hallmark Channel too and even more so Lifetime Shock Control.  I think all the gals do.  I'm just glad we have two TV's sometimes but I have to admit I have watched a few of those programs with her and some of them were actually pretty good.  But when they get too chick flicky, that's when I'm Out! Laugh

I read the life story of Frank Sinatra you posted this afternoon John.  Very interesting documentary.  I'm kind of a slow reader so I felt like I read a small book todayLaugh  I sure learned a lot of things that I didn't know.

Here's a clip on the making of the train wreck in the movie The Fugitive with Harrison Ford.  I thought you guys would find it interesting.

https://youtu.be/raalmAFeloA

And here's the actual clip.

https://youtu.be/4LF4I1S9rOo

I have a longer version on my DVD copy.  One of the cast members noticed a bum sticking his head up out of the wreck behind a retaining wall in some of the film footage.  They had lots of cameras set up from many different angles. He wasn't supposed to be there and nobody knew that he was until later at the studio when they were editing the film script.

The team members that took a good look around before the shooting of the wreck didn't see him there and remember looking there.  They thought he was a ghost.  Apparently the ghost was edited out of the movie.

Hope you all had a great SundayWink

On a tipsy evening around the holidays, my wife and I will sometimes torture ourselves with dreaded Christmas movies from The Hallmark Channel.

If you've never seen one of these, you owe it to yourself to experience at least one, preferably with drinks.

Anyway, a really AWFUL train movie is the Hallmark masterpice The Christmas Train.

I was just looking at the program schedule for tonight and saw that TCM is playing Lady on a Train at 8:00 ET. It looks like a murder mystery and it stars two people I never heard of before. Anybody know anything about this movie and if it is worth watching?

Yes, it is true.  Sinatra was having contract problems with Mr Meyer and Sam took care of it.  No won was hurt by Mr Meyer got the hint.  I have never heard of any problems with Tommy Dorsey.  Being from New York I knew a few of the gentlemen.

There are two stories for how Sinatra broke his contract with Dorsey. The publicly reported one was that he sued to get out of the contract which would have given Dorsey a cut of Sinatra's earnings for life. The story that was rumored was more a long the lines of how it was portrayed in The Godfather. Dorsey was made an offer he couldn't refuse. A TV movie from several decades ago portrayed it as it had been publicly reported. I have no idea which of the stories is true. I suspect it might have been a little of both. Move down to sections 27 & 28 of the following story as it deals with both versions of events.

I noticed the same thing trying to look at shorter video clips. Download speeds were at a snail's pace. Add to that I have satellite internet and bad weather affects it even further. I gave up trying to look at video yesterday. Today isn't any better.

You've waited 56 years to see Von Ryan's Express so another couple days shouldn't matter. Anyone who is a fan of Sinatra AND trains can't help liking this movie. I won't post any spoilers.

Good morning

Still fascinated with that bit of info how the mob straightened out Frank's little problem caldreamer.  I don't know why? .....It's a well-known fact how the mob loved Sinatra and Tony Bennett's music, why not personally?  Italians stick together.

John-NYBW

Do you think Gianconna grabbed ahold of Frank and said, "You can act like a man.".

I was bummed out that Amazon Prime was saturated yesterday John.  I don't watch much TV but I have noticed that is a common thing on the weekends here, especially in a snow storm when people stay home from work and to many people are on.

So I didn't get to watch Von Ryan's Express or Tom's recommendation of SwitchbackCrying

Oh well, I don't think Monday will be a problem and I see PC101 has a copy so maybe I'll go over to his place.

Here's a clip of that movie I caught in the middle of the night that I really liked.

I will have to add Von Ryans Express, great railroad scenes.  Just as an aside, The horses head placed in the mans bed in the Godfather actually happened.  Frank Sinatra had a dispute with Samual Meyer of MGM.  Sinatra went to his friend Sam Gianconna who sent some of his boys from Chicago to Hollywood to change Mr. Meyers mind. It worked.

That's good background information. I didn't know that. I was aware of his contract problems with Tommy Dorsey but not with Samuel Meyer.

Do you think Gianconna grabbed ahold of Frank and said, "You can act like a man.".

I'm going to look for Von Ryan's Express on Amazon today as well.

You'll be glad you did. A very underrated movie if you ask me. I don't often see it on TCM or the other cable movie channels. I think I've only seen it once since I originally saw it at a drive-in movie back in 1965. It's available now on Amazon Prime for $3.99

Laugh Just kidding, I could not resist that one.

It's an all-day snow storm up here and the roads are like a hockey rink.  A good day to watch a couple of train movies.  I hope I can find Switchback on Amazon Prime Tom.

No kidding caldreamer!?  The mob went down and straightened up Frank's little problem with Samuel Meyer for him.  I guess that makes sense since Frank was Italian.

I'm going to look for Von Ryan's Express on Amazon today as well.

Good morning

I would have to agree Sinatra was a good actor John.  I guess I haven't heard much about his younger days.  Was he an AH or something, maybe a dark past?

"My Way" is your favorite, that's a good one, mine is "One more for my baby".

https://youtu.be/m121tmJzcAc

He must of had his own show in this clip.  He did a later version of this song with some good sax music in it.

From what I understand he really liked trains and had his own building for his Lionel O gauge layout called The Compound in Palm Springs.  I learned that layout was featured in Classic Toy Trains November 2015.  There was a video of his layout but it wouldn't let me share it.

I also learned Rodger Daltrey of the Who was really into trains which I never knew.

I looked up Terror train Kevin as I've never seen it.  I'd have to say Jamie Lee Curtis was quite the hot little number back in the day.  My favorite movie of hers was True Lies with Arnold Schwarzenegger.  It was an action-packed movie with a lot of good humor.

Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing.

I'd forgotten that Sinatra was also nominated for Best Actor for The Man With a Golden Arm. It's believed the character Johnny Fontaine in the Godfather was based on Sinatra. Sinatra had signed a contract with Tommy Dorsey's band to be their lead singer but wanted out of it to pursue a solo career. Dorsey refused to release him at first but later was "persuaded" to change his mind. Whether somebody made him an offer he couldn't refuse is speculation.

I knew Sinatra had a Lionel layout but I didn't realize it had its own building. There are a number of celebrities who have been into toy or model trains. We know about Rod Stewart. Roy Campanella had a large Lionel layout. I've read that Tom Brokaw and Jay Leno are into HO.

Edit: Oh now I get it!  Paul McCarthy didn't appreciate Sinatra's music when he was younger because it wasn't hip enough at the time, ... Now I get it,  I would fall under the same scenario.

This Is the Best War Movie of All Time (msn.com)

Just saw this slideshow of somebody's list of the 50 greatest War movies of all time. Von Ryan's Express was #47 and The Train was #19.

It had all my favorites although some of them I would have had higher. I have never seen #1 in its entirety. Just clips here and there.

Afternoon

I got the 403 forbidden message twice this morning.

If Von Ryan's Express has Frank Sinatra in it, that's enough for me to watch it.  I have all of Frank's music for when I'm in the easy listening mood.  He is in my large music collection right next to Tony Bennett.

Sinatra was underrated as an actor. I believe he won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his first acting role in From Here to Eternity.

I remember Larry King interviewing Paul McCartney and asking him about Sinatra. He said he was a fan of Sinatra even though he didn't appreciate him when he was younger. That kind of sums up my feelings too. A few years ago I bought a 2 CD set of Sinatra's best songs. Most singers end up having a signature song. Sinatra had a whole career of signature songs. Everybody has their own favorite. Mine is My Way.

When I was 8 years old I acquired almost a horror of Chryslers.

Were you watching the movie CHRISTINE?

All the Chryslers were bursting into flames upright on all four wheels Overmod?  That doesn't surprise me.  I do enjoy the screw-ups more than the farfetched stuff though.  Check out the scene with all the damage on Schwarzenegger's Porsche.

https://youtu.be/d85M2-8ilvQ

Coincidental to your post but there is a serious problem with the Chrysler corporation's older Jeeps from what I have read. (Various models 93 to 07)  Many have burst into flames with fatalities when they are rear ended.  The sad thing is apparently they are not being recalled and there is still tons of them on the road.

Come to think of it, I don't remember ever seeing a train movie I didn't like either Mister B.

I never caught the Iron Horse series PC101.  If Ben won the train in a poker game, I wouldn't Annie up with a guy like thatLaugh

The Wild Wild West was on every Sunday night here for quite a while John.  They replaced it with Black Sheep Squadron recently which was okay by me.  I like Robert Conrad in both.

Have a great afternoon gentlemen.

PC101

Not really a movie but a TV series I watched back around '67. IRON HORSE the B P S & D. Ben Calhoun won the train in a poker game, the Buffalo Pa

ss, Scalplock & Defiance Railroad.

It only lasted 9 episodes which was probably more than it deserved but does anyone remember 1979's Supertrain.

Supertrain (TV Series 1979) - IMDb

It was 26 feet wide.

Supertrain (1979) (imdb.com)

The same season there was a show about a time traveling train called Time Express starring Vincent Price. It only lasted 4 episodes.

Time Express (TV Series 1979) - IMDb

Needless to say, the networks didn't try the fantasy train genre again.

Now for a really good series, James West's private railroad car figured prominently in the 1960s series The Wild, Wild, West.

Capitol Ltd

I haven't seen this one listed yet (maybe I missed  it), but I always liked Von Ryan's Express, from 1965, starring Frank Sinatra.  Lots of good European train shots.
