1930 and its hard to tell what is real and what is not.
Since, they could easily film vintage engines on site back in the 30s makes it even more exciting.

The first time I saw it is when I posted the clip here NYC. It's nice they thought like that back then. It certainly was a more wholesome time all around. I can't even believe some of the junk they put on TV these days.
My wife likes the Hallmark Channel too and even more so Lifetime Shock Control. I think all the gals do. I'm just glad we have two TV's sometimes but I have to admit I have watched a few of those programs with her and some of them were actually pretty good. But when they get too chick flicky, that's when I'm Out!
I read the life story of Frank Sinatra you posted this afternoon John. Very interesting documentary. I'm kind of a slow reader so I felt like I read a small book today I sure learned a lot of things that I didn't know.

I have a longer version on my DVD copy. One of the cast members noticed a bum sticking his head up out of the wreck behind a retaining wall in some of the film footage. They had lots of cameras set up from many different angles. He wasn't supposed to be there and nobody knew that he was until later at the studio when they were editing the film script.
The team members that took a good look around before the shooting of the wreck didn't see him there and remember looking there. They thought he was a ghost. Apparently the ghost was edited out of the movie.

On a tipsy evening around the holidays, my wife and I will sometimes torture ourselves with dreaded Christmas movies from The Hallmark Channel.
If you've never seen one of these, you owe it to yourself to experience at least one, preferably with drinks.
Anyway, a really AWFUL train movie is the Hallmark masterpice The Christmas Train.
I was just looking at the program schedule for tonight and saw that TCM is playing Lady on a Train at 8:00 ET. It looks like a murder mystery and it stars two people I never heard of before. Anybody know anything about this movie and if it is worth watching?

There are two stories for how Sinatra broke his contract with Dorsey. The publicly reported one was that he sued to get out of the contract which would have given Dorsey a cut of Sinatra's earnings for life. The story that was rumored was more a long the lines of how it was portrayed in The Godfather. Dorsey was made an offer he couldn't refuse. A TV movie from several decades ago portrayed it as it had been publicly reported. I have no idea which of the stories is true. I suspect it might have been a little of both. Move down to sections 27 & 28 of the following story as it deals with both versions of events.

I noticed the same thing trying to look at shorter video clips. Download speeds were at a snail's pace. Add to that I have satellite internet and bad weather affects it even further. I gave up trying to look at video yesterday. Today isn't any better.
You've waited 56 years to see Von Ryan's Express so another couple days shouldn't matter. Anyone who is a fan of Sinatra AND trains can't help liking this movie. I won't post any spoilers.

That's good background information. I didn't know that. I was aware of his contract problems with Tommy Dorsey but not with Samuel Meyer.

You'll be glad you did. A very underrated movie if you ask me. I don't often see it on TCM or the other cable movie channels. I think I've only seen it once since I originally saw it at a drive-in movie back in 1965. It's available now on Amazon Prime for $3.99

No kidding caldreamer!? The mob went down and straightened up Frank's little problem with Samuel Meyer for him. I guess that makes sense since Frank was Italian.
My two favorites are The Train with Burt Lancaster and the other is a cartoon Play Safe which as a little kid scared me when with trains coming to life (its on Youtube)

I'd forgotten that Sinatra was also nominated for Best Actor for The Man With a Golden Arm. It's believed the character Johnny Fontaine in the Godfather was based on Sinatra. Sinatra had signed a contract with Tommy Dorsey's band to be their lead singer but wanted out of it to pursue a solo career. Dorsey refused to release him at first but later was "persuaded" to change his mind. Whether somebody made him an offer he couldn't refuse is speculation.
I knew Sinatra had a Lionel layout but I didn't realize it had its own building. There are a number of celebrities who have been into toy or model trains. We know about Rod Stewart. Roy Campanella had a large Lionel layout. I've read that Tom Brokaw and Jay Leno are into HO.

Edit: Oh now I get it! Paul McCarthy didn't appreciate Sinatra's music when he was younger because it wasn't hip enough at the time, ... Now I get it, I would fall under the same scenario.

Just saw this slideshow of somebody's list of the 50 greatest War movies of all time. Von Ryan's Express was #47 and The Train was #19.
It had all my favorites although some of them I would have had higher. I have never seen #1 in its entirety. Just clips here and there.

Sinatra was underrated as an actor. I believe he won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his first acting role in From Here to Eternity.
I remember Larry King interviewing Paul McCartney and asking him about Sinatra. He said he was a fan of Sinatra even though he didn't appreciate him when he was younger. That kind of sums up my feelings too. A few years ago I bought a 2 CD set of Sinatra's best songs. Most singers end up having a signature song. Sinatra had a whole career of signature songs. Everybody has their own favorite. Mine is My Way.

Coincidental to your post but there is a serious problem with the Chrysler corporation's older Jeeps from what I have read. (Various models 93 to 07) Many have burst into flames with fatalities when they are rear ended. The sad thing is apparently they are not being recalled and there is still tons of them on the road.
Come to think of it, I don't remember ever seeing a train movie I didn't like either Mister B.

The Wild Wild West was on every Sunday night here for quite a while John. They replaced it with Black Sheep Squadron recently which was okay by me. I like Robert Conrad in both.
