Nuclear war, mustard gas, pandemics are not going to make an appearance on my layout, either. One of the lineside industries the Tooele Army Depot South Area/Desseret Chemical Depot would recieve via rail mustard gas, VX agent and other chemical weapons. While it would not be much more on a layout than an interchange, I would have to model it if I stuck to prototype have Union Pacific trains moving in those loads full of chemical weapons. Likely they would be in an enclosed boxcar, although some photos show them being carried on flatcars in barrels.Then the Nevada Test Site... from what I understand while the mushroom clouds were visible from Las Vegas, the flash carried even further and was visible throughout much of the southwest. So... maybe with some strobe lights set up to an electronic timer I could surprise visitors with a double flash in the room followed by the quiet ticking of a faux-Geiger counter starting to climb and go off the charts, especially for the crews working the southern end of the layout near Milford... Maybe even start dumping fake snow from the ceiling so crews can really get that authentic nuclear winter experience then have a man dressed in a white jumpsuit with a DOE patch stumble into the room and start blabbering about "this area is HOT, what are you doing out here still?" then just leave with no further context. If I want to be a stickler to prototype authenticity, simulated fallout exposure with no warning is only true to life! This layout only exists in my mind, and perhaps planning the theatrics of modeling weapons of mass destruction would put me on some strange government watchlist if they saw me Googling up mustard gas train movements in the 1950's... maybe I should consider a different era with less WMD mayhem then.

(BTW, although the movie is "Beetlejuice", his name is actually "Betelgeuse" - an astronomical reference.)

Not quite. He built a neutron source, never worked for the government (unless you count enlisting in the Navy and Marines), and died a couple years ago.

Lots of wargamers have versions of these.
We use them to mark areas of the battlefield where something very effective happened. An off-board artillery barrage where you roll all 6's is a great use of these.

An astute modeler could fix it so it looks like an actual nuclear detonation instead of a volcano, too! I'd put in a halogen source so it moves around like the real fireball... heck, I bought one to experiment with!
Now I wish I still modeled O 2-rail; this would be a perfect roof sign for the bar and 'grill' across the street from the Scope (yes, Pynchon's) -- Asimov's (with the Shiny Uranium [sic] Sphere on the sign (the nickname was "the Sphere" but has been referred to locally as "the Shroom"...)
Someone suggest the name of the drink that appears when the fireball sequence reaches its peak. (I was tempted to use Coca-Cola, the pause that refreshes when it's really hot outside... with a digital thermometer that switches from outdoor temperature to 9800 degrees.) I'd use Huyghe but I'm afraid few Americans would get it...
