MTH HO engine in need of repair
Posted by modelrailroader@mthtrains on Friday, November 5, 2021 8:48 PM

Hi, does anyone know who is actually repairing MTH HO steam engines? I have one in need of repair and can't find who now is doing repairs on these?

If you have any tips of who to contact would appreciate it, thanks!

If that username is an actual e-mail address... oh, the irony.

It would help to know exactly what the scope of the repair is, and what has been tried to solve it so far.

In need of a tune up? Most any LHS, club, or even local modeler with any experience in Steam can do that.

In need of replacement of parts specific to MTH steamers? Maybe shops where MTH was carried might have what you need. Maybe....

But a little more detail would help out a lot. Specific model? Specific need?

Scale Trains bought the HO scale tooling for MTH when they folded.  They might be worth contacting.  They're still a viable company.

I did a search and found an article that said MTH sort of still exists, as a set of 3 smaller companies located in Maryland.  I didn’t see a date on it so I don't know if it is current or just another Zombie article.

https://www.mthpartsandsales.com/ MTH parts can be found there. You will have to find someone who can service the engine for you though. I just serviced my own MTH big boy recently using parts from that website. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything.

Companies don't warranty other company's products when they buy them out even if they bought the tooling for it unless they are feeling extremely generous in which case ScaleTrains has said absolutely nothing about their acquired MTH tooling except releasing some pre-production models of their freight cars and rumors of them bringing back N&W 611 that I haven't seen mentioned on their site so I don't know where these rumors are coming from.  They have said nothing about warrantying or carrying MTH HO parts.

The gentleman that posted here, ModelTrainDepo, will be your best bet to have any chance of having your MTH HO product fixed.  The current MTH downsized massively when Mike Wolf retired as well as their desire to continue in the HO market and can no longer support your HO products especially when they sold everything to ScaleTrains and divested themselves of its HO tech support.  If anything, I have seen Cabin Fever Auctions selling off tons of spare parts from MTH's HO Warehouse which shows you how much they care for stocking HO parts anymore.  They are back to only doing O Scale now.
