Looking for brass wire supplier
Posted by E-L man tom on Thursday, September 2, 2021 8:55 AM

I am having trouble finding brass wire (0.019" to be specific), for a caboose project I'm working on. The only source I found was Detail Associates, but it is out of stock, expected to have it in on Sept. 6th. I'm thinking, with the way supplies of everything have been going, September 6th is a "best guess estimate". Are there any other sources for brass wire that I can go to?  Thanks.

I'm going to assume that .020" will work for .019".

K&S Metals sells .020":

It's available from lots of places besides direct.

Just Google "0.019 brass wire". Jewelry websites carry it.

Most hobby shops stock K&S Brass.
K&S 8159 Solid Brass Rod 0.020" x 12" (5)

It is also available on eBay.

Tichy has .02” Phosphor Bronze Wire

I am having trouble finding brass wire (0.019" to be specific), for a caboose project I'm working on.

If you're using it for handrails, Tichy's phosphor-bronze wire is a better choice:  it solders as easily as brass, but is less easily damaged due to its greater stiffness.  It is easy enough to bend, though, and less likely to fatigue as easily as most brass wire.

I used it to form most of the handrails on this modified Athearn caboose, although some of the grabirons (also phosphor-bronze) were pre-formed ones from Tichy.  For the ladders, I used Detail Associates brass bar for the rails (the curves were formed on a simple wooden jig), while the rungs are Tichy phosphor-bronze, soldered in place...

Thanks guys! Looks like Tichy is the near-unanimous choice. I will go to their website, see if they have it in stock.
