Help with Lubricating an Old Bachmann Daylight?
Posted by NarrowGaugeKid on Saturday, July 17, 2021 12:16 PM

After modeling in HOn3 for a few years and then ~15 years with everything stored away, my son seems to be more into trains than I even was as a kid and I've unpacked some older HO trains I played with as a kid for him to use.

I had a a few steam locomotives and diesels from Tyco, Lifelike and Athearn, all of which I did a basic cleaning to without major disassembly and then lubricated whatever gears I could locate with some LaBelle on the theory that eventually, any lube would get to any moving parts.  All of them seem to work well now, given the original manfucaturing quality (I forgot how loud Athearn diesels were... and how, um...moderately ok...tyco engines run)

I then unpacked a Bachmann Daylight that my great-uncle gave me after all my HO locomotives were packed away.  I never used it and he just displayed it, and as best I can gather, it's probably from the mid-80's.  To my utter shock, it actually ran the first attempt, but clearly needs lubrication as it was anything but smooth and had those "don't run me too long like this" sounds.

The problem is that I'm having trouble figuring out how I can get at any part to provide meaningful lubrication and not seeing any ready way to get the shell off or otherwise access the motor and gears.  Does anyone have any guidance on this?

Thank you!
