cuyamaNMRA National Convention timing and locations are largely dictated by a need to support the National Train Show, which to me has always seemed to be the tail wagging the dog.
Same here. It seems like a weird relationship between the two.

Living the dream.
dknelsonWhen the NMRA national was announced for the UK, work began on a much larger Midwest Regional convention in 2022, combining Midwest with North Central and Mid Central Regions AND the Railroad Prototype Modelers group, for what was intended as a four day "mini National" for those not up to taking the trip across the pond. That convention is still going to take place in Indianapolis May 18-22 and the goal is for it to be as much like a National as possible but at lower cost; one example, the host hotel is not downtown and parking will be free.
Holding a "Super Regional" Convention at a more pleasant time of year in a location away from downtown is a positive. (Not sure how the St. Louis folks will feel about the competition for travel dollars in 2022.)
NMRA National Convention timing and locations are largely dictated by a need to support the National Train Show, which to me has always seemed to be the tail wagging the dog. And in Portland and Salt Lake City, the Train Show was far away from the Convention site anyway.

That's a big deal at National conventions. So few NMRA members (as a % of the whole membership) go to National Conventions that it will be interesting to see if this deliberately different idea will put down some roots.

The virtual conventions just don't cut it for me. Think the cost is rather steep for a virtual show. I was planning on going to the show originaly as it was to be local to me, sorry it became virtual, but then I don't like zoom etc. much, just feels weird to me, I feel locked into a conversation at times and hard to break free like you can face to face.
There is a St Louis Railroad Prototypical Modelers meet the end of July

cuyamaAnd I should have mentioned that NMRA membership is not required for the Santa Clara 2021 Convention. Great opportunity to participate in clinics from presenters around the US and the globe.
That is interesting and good news.
Hopefully it works out for them.

Thanks for the information Byron.
I will wait and see if I can make a trip to Missouri will happen next year.
SeeYou190So there is no NMRA National Train Show in 2021?
The 2021 NMRA Convention in Santa Clara was moved to virtual and begins next week on July 6. No Train Show associated with it, although there are Vendor presentations and clinics. The 2021 Convention offers pre-recorded clinics followed by live Q&A, live panels, recorded layout tours, and even 1-to-1 Design and Ops help-sessions to registered attendees. The pre-recorded portions will be available to registered attendees for four weeks after the Convention ends on July 10. Just $49 for a ton of content and events.
The 2022 Convention will be in-person in St. Louis August 7th-15th and there will be an associated Train Show.

The convention for 2022 has been announced for St Louis.
Venue became unavailable.
More than likely it goes to St Louis (if there is a convention in 2022)
Definitely canceled.
Something to do with the Commonwealth Games
They had announced a few years ago that they would be doing that convention in England. HAs that plan held true or has it been changed?
