As suggested, I called Intermountain today.

Supposedly the car is available for pre-order, and I gave the lady my name and email address to confirm my reservation.

We will see what happens. I am on the list, and that is good.

I contacted/emailed Intermountain a few weeks back about obtaining a replacement handrail for a 8K tank car.  Kirk responded within 24 hrs and I was able to get two of them.  I've found both Atlas & Intermountain responsive to email queries & requests.  A phone call should work, too.

Check Walthers, they often have a large listing of pre-orders. They will be selling at full list price plus shipping, but if it is a MUST HAVE item go for it.

 I have a supplier on the west coast who I used to get all my undecorated kits from. I have contacted him recently and he can no longer get them and it seems as though Intermountain lists them the are seldom available for sale. There are a few models I want that I no longer can get anywhere.

Hi Kevin,

All of my Intermountain stuff (engines and rolling stock) come from a dealer. Some items are in stock and some you need to pre-order or reserve. Here is his website.

Send him an email telling him what you want and he'll respond and let you know. Even if you reserve an item, you are not obligated to buy once it's available, but at least it'll be ready for you if you choose.

Yes, Intermountain's website can be hard to decipher and yes, I wish they would remove the items they no longer carry.

Leaving the sold out/discontinued, or whatever, items on the website is fine, just do as Tangent, Athearn, Atlas and maybe others do. Remove those items no longer available, to a separate  section of the website.  It is very frustrating to go on a website and have to wade through the weeds to spend your money.  That is why Mr. Shron, Mr. Lelbach and the others are receiving more and more of my business.

Leaving sold out models on the website can be very handy for those of us finding used stock.

I agree. The PWRS website has long out of production stuff on it and I will go on there and refine my search to "early steam" and I can see what was available once upon a time and keep my eyes open for it.

     As suggested Kevin, I would call Intermountain directly, by telephone.  I have had telephone contact with them, including placing orders for cars, kits and parts, in the past.  You can resolve things by phone that you cannot by using the website.  I have found their website does not reflect the true status of their product line.  For instance, in HO scale, their Pomeroy Co-Op Grain, 4750 cu. ft. covered hopper, stock number 435108, is shown as "reserve now".  I have had one I ordered from an on-line purveyor, for three months.  Are they still taking reservations on a car that is most likely sold out, on the open market?

     I'm not one to bash Intermountain.  They made/make/might make a significant portion, of my roster.  What is exasperating is to go to their website, look at the listing for their excellent 4750 cu. ft. PS-2 covered hopper and, see that out of 127 item numbers listed, one is cancelled, 19, including 435108, Pomeroy Co-op, are "reserve now" and, 107 are "contact your dealer".  Out of 127 possible items, ZERO are in stock or available for possible purchase!  Some have been sold out for years.  Why continue to catalog items that are sold out and have little to no possibilty of ever being rerun?  This is just as frustrating as pre-ordering an item you will probably not live to see, such as the SD38-2.  A LONG time ago, I wanted a couple of C&IM units.  Now--forget about 'em, I've done without them this long, I can continue to live without them.  Don't misunderstand, I get it about pre-orders, lead times, tooling time, etc, etc.  Ask Jason Shron of Rapido about New Haven passenger cars and FL-9s--and RS-11s and RDCs.  Three years from taking pre-orders until the item is in the purchaser's hands is about the maximum for most manufacturers.  The SD38-2 shares the same running gear, nose, and cab, as the SD40-2, which IM also makes.  Does it take six years or more, to tool a plastic long hood that is pretty much the same as the 40-2?

     The final aspect of this rant is, "contact your dealer".  After picking myself up off the floor from laughing so hard, I used "the find a dealer" function of IM's website.  With the distance set to "no limit" and "miles", I engaged the search function.  The results came back as: Intermountain Railway Co, 1336 Sherman Dr., Longmont CO, 80501, USA.  Distance from me? Oh, just shy of 800 miles!  This makes contacting a dealer a joke when the importer is your dealer!

    Your undecorated C-40-4 caboose kits show up as "confirmed for production" on the current advance reservation page--along with the erstwhile SD38-2 and a gazillion other items we'd like to have--someday.  Intermountain usually shows a few undecorated kits available when they do a run, contact them by phone.

Everyone seems to be going into pre orders now and the companys tend to order just enough and a few extras in case of a problem. Just in time is becoming the norm for a lot of companys but if something goes wrong like with the chip supply problem for new cars, things can grind to a halt very fast. So yes you missed the boat but you may be able to snag one of the extras and there may be a hobby shop that has one once they arrive. Contact costomer service for Intermointain and see but I will tell you that the chance of extra undecorated is very slim.

Intermountain is making a caboose that I want one of.

According to their website, it is confirmed for production, but when I click on the item, there is no information on how to order one.

Did I miss out because I did not reserve one already? Do they only sell to dealers?

Does anyone have experience ordering from Intermountain's website that can help? I could use some guidance.
