You are fortunate.  I have great train stores locally, but they usually will NOT negotiate a pre-order price, because if the price goes up they may lose money.

Rapido post the price upfront and I have never known them to change it. If there were some unforeseen circumstance that required a change there is no doubt in my mind that Jason would not hold anyone to the pre-order.

I never have that problem about forgetting pre-ordered items. I write them down with the amount next to them.

My problem is wondering what month it's coming so I have money in the account.

You are fortunate.  I have great train stores locally, but they usually will NOT negotiate a pre-order price, because if the price goes up they may lose money.  Now--they verbally tell me what I will most likely expect to pay--and they tend to stick to that price.  However, I have nothing in writing committing them to that price.  This goes back to brass days, when the price of the model delivered a few years later may have gone up since the time the original order was placed.  Relatively few shops will actually guarantee a preorder price, in my experience.

Respectfully submitted--

John

I have two Rapido ten-wheelers on pre-order, I negotiated a good price and I am looking forward to getting them. I learned that I seem to get a better price if I negotiate on a preorder rather than make an offer on an in-stock item.

My preorder surprises are usually a year later, and they say "we decided not to make the version you preordered", nothing for you.

I remember a back order I had with Trainworld getting a call a year and a half later (having completely forgotten about it) that it came in.

The "penny down" sounds like Factory Direct Trains model. Scale Trains doesn't have the penny down pre-order. Plus, for the SD45s, they haven't billed yet. That's tomorrow (or later today now that I see what time it is). They sent out the alert to stand by for billing this morning. I know this as I have two ordered.

your correct , no penny down

That's a new one for me. First we have people complainign about having to preorder, now we have someone preordering something they really didn't want in the first place?

Don't know how you did that.  I've pre-ordered from ScaleTrains.  When the locos came in I was notified but they didn't charge my CC.  I could have let them go and ST would have just sold them to someone else. What you descibe sounds nothing like my preorder experience with ScaleTrains.
