Brass Locomotive Drop Damage
Posted by BrassModeler on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 5:15 PM

Hello Fellow Forum Users, Today, I was looking at a Challenger Imports E7A unit with drop damage. I was looking for one of these for a number of years and finally found it, but as I said before, it had drop damage. I was wondering if this was repairable. Here is the link: https://www.brasstrains.com/Classic/Product/Detail/113256/HO-Brass-Model-CIL-2195-1-CB-Q-E7A-1950s-Large-Number-Boards-9931-A-F-P-DROP-DAMAGE-

Thank you to anybody who will help me.

Happy Modeling!

Matt

I am no expert on this model, where exactly is the damage?

All I see is the bend pilot

Welcome

It could most likely be repaired with the proper tools but if that’s the asking price I wouldn’t go there myself but then I’m not a brass guy.

Oh Im blind haha

Considering its only discounted for only about $100, its most certainly not worth it.

(one sold for $495 like new)

Its certainly fixable, Id recommend getting a plastic/rubber hammer, I bought one for hammering out car dents, but it's nearly impossible to remove a dent like that perfectly. Not to mention you'll likely have to remove the handrails and horn above the cab when shaping the cab roof. Then you'll have to repaint that area.

I guess if you're not bothered with the damage and use it as a trailing unit it wouldnt be a big deal, but if that's the case I wouldnt be paying $400 on a brass model.

I agree with all of the comments above.  It could, of course, be repaired, but, as mentioned, you'd also need to at least partially re-paint it.  I too consider the price out of line for what's being offered.

If you're capable of doing the repairs and the re-painting, it might be a thought to dicker on the price, but if you're planning to shop it out to someone for restoration, it might make the asking price look puny by comparison.

You could likely pick-up the Proto version of the same locomotive for less money, and, if necessary, simply improve the details where needed.

Dan Glasure, the owner of BrassTrainsDotCom has said a brass locomotive hitting the floor is the second worst sound there is.

I would not buy that one.

If you look at the top of the cab you will see a dent at around the middle.

It sure is! I remember having my first brass piece and how happy I was showing it off to everybody. That was until one of my friends held it up and dropped it by accident. Probably one of the saddest moments in railroading. I repaired it but it was never the same. I found one of these on BPL brassworks (a small website with great models) (railmodel.com) without the damage so I might go ahead and contact them.
