My layout represents far more than just the two freelance locales depicted. Imagination permits me and other guest operators to visit ant number of towns and cities, just be all like "ok, 5 laps and were in Gouldin, and another 7 loops and now were in Canberryhook.
But that's where normal ends, and this begins...
T'was nigh to 10 years in the future. Panic and unease riddled the towns and places upon our great planet earth. An earth sized shard of a much bigger planet had been drifting away from some unbeforeseen galaxy. There was much fear and speculation that the shard would smack into Earth, as was there hope that the comet would pass right past earth within a couple hundred km or so.
Neither theory was correct. Because this large shard of a very big planet was just lazily drifting along, and because of it's comperable mass to earth, Earth and the shard fell into a binary orbit with each other. Just think of putting a stir stick into a cup of coffee and spinning it by snapping your fingers; the two halves of the stir stick representing the planet and the shard are going to be going round and round each other, while the stick is probably going to circumnavigate the cup once or twice, given that the center of the tea is the sun.
it was in less than 2 years after binariation that a successful mission was mounted to explore this new shard, dubbed Jozawa by the first white people upon the shard. It was discovered that Jozawa had resources in abundance, and for some unexplainable reason all the vegitation and fauna that came from the planet this shard came from are all flourishing healthily to this very day and beyond.
in less than another 2 years the humans of Earth shipped up some supplies, railroading equipment, materials, etc, and began colonizing Jozawa. It is worth mentioning here that there was a species many years ago living upon this shard that had left a note that said "hello, we are the Chevfordram people of the bigger planet in the old system, before the asteroid did it. we have been living upon this here shard for 47 years, travelling through space. Yesterday there was discovered a new planet that we decided to beam all of us and our stuff to, in hopes that would be our new home. if any aliens or terrestrials find this shard please build the railroads upon it, assuming you know what a railroad is and are that far advanced, because my grandfather was the greatest conductor ever on the..." then the rest of the note was destroyed by trampling of a mysterious mythical people that never made it to earth.
Far out and far fetched. I'll give ya that!
Edited. in. I recon that unless someone is faithfully modeling a real 1/1 railroad, they are doing some freelancing. Thus creating an alternate reality. From there, it's just a matter of degree. Dan

You win... that is even more far-fetched than any of the multitude of histories I have written for my STRATTON AND GILLETTE railroad.

Yes, I am one of THOSE people who refuises to call is "sci-fi". It's science fiction of SF (which is more general, speculative fiction) because I am firmly in the camp that there are plenty of writers every bit as good as any of those stuffy "classic" authors, and the genre gets no love from the academia just because of the choice of subject matter.
Anyway, definitely 'far out there' but hey, why not. At least you're creative. If we can have articles on moon trains and trains on Mars (though I don't think Bowie mentioned them), why not this?

I might have missed it, but does this freelanced railroad have a name?
So given that the shard Jozawa came from long long ago and galaxy far far away, what does the flora and fauna look like? Any implications for landscaping the layout i.e. Ewoks and purple trees?
