I got a decent deal on an Kato RS 1 and the only problem I've noted is it is missing the snap-on smoke stack. Checking the internet, I haven't seen where I can buy one. Any suggestion of a source would be appreciated.
Thanks.
They are currently available on eBay.
The item title is: "RS-1 Exhaust Stack (Qty 2) Atlas China & Kato 810207 HO RS1"

Living the dream.
Failing that, I think Custom Finishing has a metal detail part for the stack

The Kato website usually has parts for sale, but it's kinda hit-and-miss if they have what you need or not.

Keep in mind Kato never has made an HO RS-1; their's in an RS-2 / RSC-2. I wonder if you what you have is an Atlas RS-1 that uses a Kato motor and drive train; it might say "Kato" underneath but actually be an Atlas RS-1.

I don't know for sure if this is true, but I seem to recall reading once that RS-1s had two different styles of stacks. Did the units with steam generators have a different style stack?
When I tried those words to came up "No Results Found". Do you happen to have a URL?
Thanks for the info.
Your RS-1 is an Atlas diesel. The older one's were made by Kato, the newer one's are made in China. Atlas doesn't list a spare stack but I would contact them to see if they have one.

I thought a RS-1 steam generator would be in the short hood, far from anything related to the 539.
If I recall correctly, Frisco put smoke lifters on at least some RS-1s and then gave them extended stacks -- other roads surely made some modifications too. The non turbo 539 did have a smaller stack (cf. S-1) but I think all the RS-1s were 539T equipped.
OvermodThe RS-2s and -3s had two different styles for sure, changed when the water-cooled turbo was implemented for the 244 engine.
That might be what I was thinking of.
I could have sworn I had a detail part that was an exhaust stack for an RS1 with a steam generator. Maybe these were add-ons for the short hood.
I am not going to dig it out to verify... maybe in a few months if I come across it I will respond.
Bowser has a metal one. Cary part #13-417.
Yes, the RS-1 could have a steam generator in the short hood for passenger service. They'd normally be spotted by a 'shotgun' stack right behind the cab.
I found this online - not sure who did it originally, but it shows the stack:

That is a different part from the main exhaust stack from the turbocharger, which 'normally' has a quadrangular base transitioning to a relatively fat cylindrical stack.
Amhsingly enough I found a reference that seems to indicate the Custom Finishing part referenced earlier in this thread is actually this SG exhaust stack, not the main one -- someone was bewailing that the 'production' RS-1 models made years ago didn't have the passenger-specific short hood detail...
Not knowing what railroad's locomotive you are modeling, I offer the following: As the 539T powered locomotives began to age, at least two railroads, the Santa Fe and, the New Haven replaced the original Alco stacks with homemade applications, most likely due to turbocharger replacement or modification. Santa Fe's were tall, rectangular affairs, oriented the same as the original ALCo stacks. They were a bit taller than the original item because of turbo lag and the resultant black smoke.
The New Haven stacks had a raised rectangular base quite unlike the ALCo stacks, topped by flattened oval cross section stack oriented the same as the original. Both roads also did this to their S-2 switchers, although New Haven did not go for the extra height as the ATSF did.
I tried the Bowser site under Cary and that part number is not listed. Where did you see it?
Sorry for the delay answering you. Google "English's Model Railroad Supply." On the left column you'll see "HO Cary". The stack is listed on page 5 and it shows "In Stock."
