Are these two locos the same?

Well, then...not sure if the mechanisms are the same, but they may well be, being from the same manufacturer and having the same wheel arrangement. The lower one would be more appropriate for an 1890's themed layout, since it is lettered for SP (as I think we talked about earlier, there wasn't a Southern Pacific yet in 1880) and because it has been overtaken by the grim basic-black color scheme that swept railroading in the 1890's. The stack, while not quite the big conical type, is appropriate for a late woodburner. It would suit your needs just fine.

Separate Engines-- You remember an IHC 4-4-0 I got for my daughter.

Both the engines shown above are MDC Roundhouse.

To answer your roundabout question, if you buy the SP model from IT, you'll get the one in the second picture like you want. The two engines you show are similar, but the SP model has a different stack and pilot as I recall, as well as the obvious paint scheme and tender.

Let me know how it runs, since I've been looking at one as well...

I can see that the stack is different, but it looks like there is a part to the front of the second one. Obviously the tender is a little different too, but I'm wondering if the IT 2-6-0 that I haven't seen and the 2nd 2-6-0 aren't the same.
