He followed the principles of the Rev. Peter Denny (of Buckingham Great Central fame). By choosing a certain area and tight timeframe everything was researched and therefore looking at the model everyone knew it was set in Dorset. By running trains that ran there in his timeframe once again everyone knew the date.
If he did the same with his American based layout (which I no doubt he did), then that would be a joy to see.

His work is almost legendary in the UK. His work being published in model railway magazines etc. His Hintock Branch is amongst 'the greats'.

Nice, thanks for the links Trevor! Definitely a talented man with an artists touch! His layouts looking great and it was not noticeable that many businesses can not receive full car load! I see his layouts and want to run trains, seeing it in fullest glory!

I have the 75 year DVD collection, and the 10 year update more recently released, as well as the 20 year set of MRP. I PROBABLY have the issue of GMR, but an older one like that, not in digital form, so not easily searchable.

rrinker Don't think it was based on MRL, as the only hits for that in the past 15 years is a 2009 N scale layout and the owner was born and raised in the US, and the only big industry pictured in the article is a cement plant. The only hits for a Flynn over the past 20 years are some track plan articles for Wisconsin areas by a Patrick Flynn in 2004 and 2005. Also not what you are looking for. --Randy

When I think of British modelers who lived in the US and built US layouts I think of John Flann. Is that the name? He wrote several good articles for Model Railroad Planning, but none in MR that I can recall.
But I see from the index on this website that Flann, who I believe is now deceased, wrote about Clark Fork - a Montana shortline, in the December `1997 issue of Model Railroading magazine (note the "ing") and another Clark Fork article in the January 2000 issue of Great Model Railroads from Kalmbach. Try there if you have the issues.

Here in the UK we can buy a number of back issues of magazines printed a few years back. Maybe, just maybe, MR could have an issue of the magazine you require. If you can track the date of issue, then ask MR if they have a copy you could purchase? More often than not it works over here.
If they do not have a copy and know there is interest, perhaps MR will do a feature of the article.
Need some help, I recall an excellent HO layout from a British modeler that moved to Montana. He had a layout featured in MR, 10 to 15 years ago. It was based on Montana Rail and was L-shaped. He had a building that I really liked and want to build (a salt or sodium bicarb company). I believe the modeler's last name is Flynn. He later moved to Logan Utah and his son a webpage that shows a more recent layout. Unfortunately, he has passed away. Ring any bells? Should have scanned the layout but did not....
