Steven Otte Before you all get too excited, Forum software upgrades are currently slated for phase 3, sometime in spring 2021. Glad to hear forum upgrades are included in the plans.

This is starting to sound like Vaporware.

I sure hope this new fangled forum includes a much superior auto correct text prediction software.  The current software does not work at all for touch screen keyboards.

If you're typing on a phone/tablet that's NOT the site doing that, that's actually your phone doing the autocorrect/predictive text. Site upgrades will have NO EFFECT on that.

Relevant to different languages, Dale Earnhardt Jr admits to pronouncing signal: singal and mirror, mirra.  Maybe that's the state of NC education?

It's not so much that there's not a spell checker, it's that whatever the forum does for the message entry screen totally blocks the spell checker that every browser has these days. Not a problem sending replies to email Groups I am on, and even the PM editor on here - the spell checker works! Nothing Kalmbach can do, but I'd LOVE to have the actual developers of this forum software explain how one message editor screen can have a spell checker and another doesn't. Why ion the heck would you write two different pieces of code to perform the same function?

BTW - I am a top notch speller. My problem is my brain works a WHOLE lot faster than I can type. Which is typically with 2 fingers, one on each hand. There have been times when I have types without closely watching the keyboard and it loosk liek some sort of code - because I was off a line to the left or right so EVERY letter is the one next to the one I thought I was hitting. Never did learn to touch type, and at this point, never will.

                                       --Randy

I was taught typing in high school but could do much faster with two fingers. I learned to two finger type over 30 words per min. when I was doing papers and some of the papers I did could have 0 mistakes.

Unfortunately for us Canadians, spellcheck will be mis-spellcheck for those of us using proper English spelling...it is, after all, the "English" language, while some "American" spelling doesn't quite cut it for me, especially the mis-use of the otherwise non-existent "zee" - pronounced similar to "cee" when used individually, but unnecessary otherwise. Oh, here we go.  Two people (well, three if you include the kanucks) separated by a common language.  Yeah, I get it - I'm an AmURican married to a Brit.  She is stubborn too.

"Us (us, us, us, us) and them (them, them, them, them)

And after all we're only ordinary men
Me
And you (you, you, you)
God only knows
It's not what we would choose (choose, choose) to do (to do, to do)"

Is a locmootive something used to move cows around?

If there is a piece of equipment for moving cows around, it should be called a locmootive.

Maybe I should get over to the drawing board, invent the locmootive, and make a few bucks.

Hence my only desire at this point is for someone to create a viable search function.

Please feel free to ask any questions you have. I have been here alomost four years and I have seen the same question asked a few times. It does not bother me when questions get asked again.

As someone new to the hobby, I'm using this and other forums to educate myself about the myriad aspects of railroading and modeling that are discussed by those of you who possess such profound knowledge and experience. At times it's like trying to drink from a fire hose.  If I don't immediately copy and save important information to my computer, I  find it difficult and frustrating when I attempt to go back through posts to re-read information that I know is in here somewhere, but I can't recall the poster, or the thread, or how long ago it was posted.  It's like playing the old game show "Concentration."

Hence my only desire at this point is for someone to create a viable search function.  I understand that Google does a great job identifying historic threads and I try to take full advantage of that capability.  Unfortunately, in my experience Google is ineffective when it comes to researching recent model railroading posts.

For me, spell check is nice to have but not essential.

I did learn how to touch-type, and am a pretty-good speller, too, but on this tiny Mac keyboard there's not much room for error, so I use mostly my two middle fingers (no offense intended) and occasionally my pinkies.   Almost every time I enter the letter "a", I also manage to hit "caps lock", and continue typing a line or two ALL_CAPS until I notice what's on the screen.  Naturally, I have to delete it all and re-type it properly.
I also notice, when reading threads that I'm sorta following (I no longer subscribe to any threads) that there were some mis-hit keys in my earlier responses, and I always (when I notice them) go back and edit those mistakes.

As a moderator on another forum, I also correct some spelling and punctuation mistakes made by others, as after a set period of time, they can no longer make corrections.  I don't know if anybody even notices that their input has been amended, but I do know that if I were in their place, I'd appreciate the corrections.

My problem is that I just cannot type certain words. For all of my trying, I just cannot type the word "sensor", I always type "sesnor" instead. There are about a dozen words I just cannot type. I know how to spell them.

I almost always type "locomotive" as "locmootive", and that causes a lot of issues in here.

Without the link, there is not much to see as I didn't get the email.  I don't have to leave the US to find that people put their groceries in sacks, not bags and have pop, not soda, with their ginders not subs and it's yins, not y'all.

A better search engine is highly desirable.

English by its very nature is adaptable. If there is no word for something in english then a native word can be used and it by defalt is english if you ignore its history. If you follow modern english adaptaions you will find that casa and house can both be used and most will understand. Proper english, I dont think so, never saw a Canadian say bumpershoot, they say umbrella just like we do in the states. If I remember right they do say petrol instead of gasoline.

I was educated in the old Calvert System out of Baltimore, but at 14K' in the Andes, until the end of Gr 8.  We repatriated in 1966 for a number of reasons, whereupon I was immediately ensconced in Canadian English (the real English).  Perforce, I had to adapt quickly or be repeatedly dinged by S/HWMBO.  So, you see me using program/programme, modeling/modelling, and abote instead of abow-t. Hey, it could be worse; I could be from Hog Town and say abaywt.Laugh

Depending on your browser you can choose "English (Canadian)" as your language preference. Spell check does not live inside M-R forum rather your browser choice.

Yeah, I've done that, listing my preferences in-order, from Canadian English, to British English, then American English - it works properly sometimes, but not always.

Unfortunately for us Canadians, spellcheck will be mis-spellcheck for those of us using proper English spelling

I kind of have a similar problem.

Most of the books I read are published/printed in the UK, so I have become used to the "proper" English spellings of a lot for certain common words, and tend to use them interchangeably when typing.

-Kevin

Has anyone (else) ever noticed that UK publishers use 'single' quote marks instead of "double" quote marks?

I guess it's their idea to save ink.

Also, you have the option of adding words, so when I type "coupler" and it comes up as unrecognizable in spellcheque you can right-click it and add it to your dictionary.

I happen to use Chrome and here are options for changing your language preference:

https://www.itsupportguides.com/knowledge-base/tech-tips-tricks/google-chrome-how-to-change-spell-check-language/

You can download and install your own Canadian spell check if you prefer but the M-R forum still won't recognize it.

All I care about are all the little things that have been broken for a long time you kinda expect in 2020, like spellcheck, working message notifications, and maybe more modern image handling.
