I agree with Kevin that the money for the online access is well spent. I have MR in hard copy back to 1949 and there are many useful articles going back at least that far, and tons of scale drawings of rolling stock and structures, far more than these days. Just the coverage of online industries alone, and the "railroad you can model" articles are worth the price.
Interestingly and ironically, the Model Railroader articles that "age" the most are the ones where they were attempting to be cutting edge on new technology in areas such as control and signaling. And yes there are some materials recommended in the old days that we would not want to use now, from carbon tetrachloride to asbestos to mercury. The philosophies about track planning have evolved but there are still some old track plans going way back (and by way back I mean before 1960) that are worth careful study.

cdndmrI'm hoping somone knows of a link to the written portion of the San Jacinto layout by Andy Sperandeo? The layout plan is easy to find but i would like to read the article.
to the forums. Your first few posts are delayed by the moderators, but that ends after a very few posts. Please stick it out and enjoy the conversations.
The on-line Model Railroader archives are a fantastic resource. Browsing through old MR online can suck up entire days before you know what happened.
