I just watched the video of Howard Zane's layout on Model Railroader Video Plus. It is a pure delight.
Howard said two things during the narration that made me smile pretty big.
In one scene he is building a beautifully scratch built wooden passenger car. He shows the bottom and says he has no idea if any of the braking, piping, or underbody details are correct, but it looks good to him, so it is good enough.
Then near the end he is showing a model of a cement plant and said he did no research and just built what looked good to him. He stated that model railroading is about limitless imagination.
Both of these points are exactly the way I feel, and I could not have said it better.
It is great to see people really having fun.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
I saw that video also and agree with everything said. When looking at the whole layout, motive power, rolling stock, buildings, scenery, everything just looks excellent and hearing him talk about it you can tell he's having a great time with it. In the end pleasing ourselves is what a hobby is all about, is it not? But in Howard's case he is pleasing a lot of others also with the displaying of talents. It was a great video.
