On my old ones I used #5s before changing to my standard 148s.. My newer center beams came with Walther ProtoMax II coupler and I didn't replace them

Did you try a #5 (bronze spring) or #148 (whisker) ? Or did you not try anything first ?

I tried a 148 it would work, but it looks like it needs to be a little longer like maybe a 146

Kadee publishes a "what-fits-what" list on their website.  It lists every piece of rolling stock made since the 1940s.  Although it is possible to warp a #5 coupler into anything, you will save yourself a good deal of filing and hacking and cussing if you go with Kadee's recommendations.

John, A 146 will work and give you a more prototype looking coupler since real centerbeams have  extended shank couplers.

What about scale head versions?  Those look a little bit more realistic.
