Thinking of buying an unfinished brass Perfect Scale RSD- 5 road switcher.Wise purchase?
I do not know anything about the model in question, but every brass diesel I have owned, exceot my Overland FP-7, was a very poor runner.
Is this an older model?

I agree with Kevin here. The open gearing on the trucks is a sure sign of potential trouble. Keeping enough lube on them without picking up stray bits plus slinging oil all over might pose a problem.

Brass trains rates the noise level at an 8 out of ten (1 being quiet) should give you an idea.
If you like to tinker you might find an old Atlas or perhaps Broadway Limited drive to replace the guts?
Good Luck, Ed
Bad idea I see!

I agree.. Pass.. There are better brands of brass RSD4/5s on the market.
Don't let the rookies fool you .. Brass diesel drives dosen't sling grease or oil all over the place unless you over oil.
My very first brass diesel was a Alco Models RS-1.. While it whined when running it was a smooth running engine over all and would give you slow switching speeds.

I just got a Tetsudo 4-6-6-4 Challenger ...a bit noisy but it has a mean vibe I really like growls at you but the valve gear run very smoothly!

I like brass, but I am very happy with the BLI challenger once P3 board and motor have been replaced.
