N Scale Mogul 2-6-0 Problem Solved!!
Posted by darrel480 on Saturday, August 1, 2020 2:06 PM

A while back I asked if anyone knew what coupler to use to replace the "monster" E-ZMate coupler that comes on the front and rear of the newer Model Power/MRC Mogul.  The E-Z Mate coupler is way to large and clunky for N Scale and worse yet, it would not couple to either Micro Trains or Atlas couplers, would not center correctly. So I went about trying to find a replacement.  I tried everything, MT Z Scale (too low)  MT N Scale ( coupler box too big) and even tried a different E-Z Mate to solve the coupling issue. Nothing worked :(.  The solution turned out to be Atlas Accumate.  I removed an Accumate from an engine that I don't use now (don't think you can buy Accumate couplers). Atleast I can't.  The Accumate and E-Z Mate couplers work pretty much the same way (no tiny spring that MT uses). First I tried mounting the Accumate coupler box on the front of engine.  It was too big. So, I took the coupler out of the Accumate coupler box.  I used the same small plastic spindle that came with the engine and the same screw and wola it worked!  The couplers line up perfectly with both MT and Atlas cars and they couple all the time. The coupler is smaller than the supplied E-Z Mate and it looks much better because the shank is shorter.  Hope I can do the same for the rear tender coupler.  Hope this helps anyone with the same problem.

That is good news.

Is there any chance you have before and after pictures?

Sorry Kevin, I'm not too tech savy so don't do pictures.  Guess I'll have to work on that.
