Hi, I am hoping to 'resurrect' 2 No. of the above models. Could anyone please supply a photo of a similar model that they have - viewed on the underside of the Frame, that shows the correct layout of the small fittings and the two 'boxes'.

On my models, the fittings have been glued-on differently to one another and unfortunately, large 'blobs' of 2-pack adhesive have been badly applied.

Also the Couplers and Draw-beams were broken off, right back to underneath the car-ends (bad packaging) Any advice on how to repair these using Kadee Couplers, would be a help.

I believe you are talking about the AB brake system detail parts.

Location varies in the real world, and there is very little additional detail on the Roundhouse cars to reference their correct locations. On many older "Blue Box" Athearn cars it is impossible to assemble these details correctly.

The photo below shows a typical arrangement.

The brake cylinder (with the cone on the end) should be positioned near the center sill with the cone pointing towards the brake wheel end of the car.

The air reservoir (rounded tank) and control valve (small box) are usually positioned on opposite sides of the car from one another.

This is my "Fakey Brakie" AB system applied to a typical freight car model. It is not intended to be 100% accurate, but rather just photograph well in low-angle side profile shots of the model.

The two "boxes" you refer to are the fuel tanks for the refrigeration unit.

As for the couplers, cut away any remaining parts of the original, and replace with the Kadee 242 coupler box.  Kadee has others that will work, I use the 242's

That freight car is in Alabama and was blown onto its side during Hurricane Michael. It gave me a great opportunity to learn a lot about underframe details. I took about 50 pictures of it.

Thank you for your replies. The unfortunate Boxcar is good for a great many details. Kevin's photo shows materials and methods used, which are useful. The photo of the real thing is good for all the detail it shows + it is a good photo. The roof appears to be peaked (?) whereas the Athearn/RH model has a 3-Facet roof. Thanks also for the Kadee info'. Jeff Wilson's book mentions rebuilds of these Cars, Reefers photo 6

Ironically, an hour after I posted, I checked ebay-UK (HO Wagons) and there was a new listing for the same model (UP livery) The photos included the Instruction-sheet. From that, both Car Bodies have been assembled wrong-way to the Frame so that the Fuel Tanks are farthest from the Reefer-units and not one of the Fittings are correctly positioned!

However with, all this info', I am pretty sure I can sort these two out. Thank you, Paul
