I've had 3 Bachmann K4s(dcc ready type) and over 7 Bachmann 2-8-0s under my ownership. Of those, I've experienced 2 cracked gears. You wont find replacement parts for the gears. You're best bet would be either trying to glue it together, or just purchase a second engine, grab the gear, then sell it for parts(what I did). This is the downside for purchasing used.
If you have the 1st gen Bachmann K4 (looks like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Bachmann-Spectrum-Pennsy-Pacific-K4-PRR-HO-Steam-Locomotive-4-6-2-Train-Engine/293516652280?hash=item4456f4aef8:g:PwMAAOSwoJ5ecoGA), then dont bother fixing it, they are infamous for their poor mechanisms.
PS of the 7 2-8-0s, basically everything is easy to replace, including the belt. I've completely disassembled/reasssembled my 2-8-0s many times!
Good luck!

My old K4 had the same problem. I fixed mine with glue and careful quartering, but for a more permanent fix, you can easily make a replacement axle spacer using Evergreen plastic tube. Most hobby stores including Hobby Lobby should carry it.

tin can Following this. Is there anything in the NWSL catalog that could be used as a replacement? I have an issue with a Spectrum 2-8-0; it "free wheels." Need to take it apart and give it a better look.

The Spectrum 2-8-0 used a cogged drive belt. Yours may be broken if it freewheels. There are instructions on this site for dismantling and changing the belt; belts are available. It doesn't look easy, though.

richg1998 I do know Shapeways has axles for the Bachmann 4-8-4 but that might not be what you want. Rich

I got some axles and gears for a Bachmann 4-8-4, but they are a different size. I didn't see a K4, but there are some other Bachmann locos listed. I sent a message to one of the makers and I'll see what he says.
wrench567 There are several versions of the Bachman K4s. If it is the old split frame with a timing belt drive, parts are non existent. I have one of those that cracked the drive gear on the motor. The locomotive is purely a decoration. The tender has been converted to a weed sprayer. It never did run smooth. The DCC ready version is much better after adding some weight. I can not give you any info on the latest version. The original version always ran horrible. The side rods are very loose fitting,, drive belt is poor quality that binds and loosens as it turns, and the wheels always stopped on the axles. My advise would be to cut your losses and find a newer version to run.. Pete

Not familiar with a drive belt version. This one is the standard split frame version, with a worm gear on the motor and an idler in the frame: https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=68_665&zenid=khfqnpqqncgbmgl2raioumk9m2

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.
garya I bought a damaged parts loco off eBay, an older Bachmann Spectrum K4. It's missing some detail parts that I can replace, but while it runs, it waddles and binds. The last driver was out of quarter, so I tried to adjust--unfortunately, it slips. I dismantled and the axle spacer is cracked. It looks like someone tried to fix with CA. I could try that again, but it's not the easiest loco to dismantle so I'd prefer a more permanent repair. Parts are not available from Bachmann. Anyone have a lead on parts? I looked on Shapeways and didn't see one, but I may not have been looking in the right place.

Like your K4, my 4-8-2 had waddles and binds. I sent it back to Bachmann for repairs, and the second time around, Bachmann said that it lacked the parts to repair it and offered a replacement, but not another 4-8-2.
I hope that you can repair your K4 so that it doesn't suffer the same fate as Thumper, R.I.P.
I expect that Sheldon (Atlantic Central) will check in soon with some advice on your problem.
Good luck.

I would not hesitate to attempt a repair, except I would use two-part epoxy and rubber bands or some other clamp to ensure the items are tight when the epoxy cures.
I don't know about spare parts, but I wish you well, and that you get some knowledgeable answers.
