DCC decoder in IHC Mikado
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 8:43 AM
Hey Ya'll

I have achived what was considered to be impossible for teenagers(13 year olds at least). I have installed a DCC Lenz decoder in an IHC 2-8-2 Mikado.

By following the steps meantined in the Article on istalling a decoder in IHC engines, and using a cold-heat soldering iron (it is a soldering iron that heats up in a few seconds and cools down in a few seconds right after it is finished with the job, this is the most important tool in my tool kit), I succesfully installed a Lenz decoder in less than 1 hour.

I have also purchased a Bachmann E-Z DCC system with a Norfolk and Southern Geep, so thi locomotive is a great addition to my fledgling DCC layout.

For anolog operations, I use my Bachmann 4449 Daylight, my Smokey Mountain Express 0-6-0, or my 4-4-0 Jupitor.

I love DCC, and a 6x9 layout is being built.

Just be careful with the Cold heat soldering iron. It works on the resistance principle, so it's passing current between the two points of the tip. If it should contact one decoder lead while you're soldering another, it will in all likelihood damage the decoder.

Congratulations Nick. Hardwiring a decoder into a steamer is an accomplishment . Enjoy it and have fun,

Thanks,

I feel so confident, I might just try installing a decoder in my Bachmann Jupitor 4-4-0.
