Bachmann E-Z couplers to Kadee
Posted by don7 on Saturday, June 13, 2020 8:00 PM

I have a few of the Spektrum HW coaches and would like to change the couplers over to the kaydee couplers, What is the correct number of the Kaydee to use for the conversion?

It looks like Kadee recommends the number 27 on their coupler conversion guide.

i have been using the Kadee 148 whisker—it drops right into the Bachmann box.

Most of the EZ Mates are a direct replacement using the 148 series.

However, as was mentioned, there are some key differences.

If it's the Heavyweight series, there is some work to make the couplers fit properly, using a #27. However, the coupler box itself will need to work done, and might not still work correctly according to Kadee.

Small radii users (18", "S" curves, and #4 Turnouts) according to Kadee will need to do more work yet, or if the stock coupler box is giving issues (normally Kadee has a note regarding droop), then you will need a #454 bracket/box and a #36 coupler. (Each sold seperately.)

Kadee does have a note saying they cannot guarantee the 27 will work properly, due to the dsign of the Spectrum coupler box. (Above noted drooping issue.) They therfore reccomend replacing the box with the 454 and using the 36 couplers.
