McMaster-Carr is the best!  And their catalog is easily 6"+ thick.  At one time you could even purchase a man-hole cover from them.  They have everything and usually at very competitive prices.

Was it an HO scale or prototypical manhole cover?

Yes, McMaster Carr is fantastic, for this hobby and for my garden tractor hobby.

When I was among the productive citizens (pre-retirement) the McMaster-Carr catalog and their on-line equivalent was my bible. Absolutely a top-notch supplier of hardware and tools and materials.

Just recently I posted asking about music wire for overcenter springs on fast tracks turnouts. I got some good advice but not much on where to buy it. I did order first from one of our good  online shops who listed it as in stock only to receive an e mail that they would not have it until mid July After several hours of research I finally came across a site that has just about anything you would need in the way of hardware for model railroading. I was able to get  100 pieces of .035 music wire 1 foot long each for $8.45 and I had it the next day from Atlanta to Central Florida. They sell it by the 1/4 lb., 1lb, or by 1 or 3 foot pieces & from.006 on up to .125  and in most sizes the graduation is in .001 increments They also have sheet styrene, adheasives (a little pricey) screws etc. You would have to type in the search box on their website. The name of the company is McMaster-Carr. I plan on checking with them first before I buy hardware again. My total order was just $8.45 and they said they would sell anything that was on their website in the quantity listed on it. This was contrary to what I had read about the company selling only to businesses . It is a huge website so be prepared to spend some time looking through it.
