Noisy Kato NW2 : help
Posted by bruce22 on Thursday, April 16, 2020 1:52 PM

This engine has given me excellent service till recently. It was in storage for the past year, and now, has developed a high pitched squeal when moving in either direction or any speed. I have been able to isolate it to the trucks but am stymied as to where or why. Any suggestions. Thanks to all in advance.

Was it stored upright or on its side?  My guess is that its probably due for a good cleaning and re-lubing.  I would try that first before doing anything else.

My Kato NW-2 was in storage for years when I got it out in 2018 to give it a try, and it ran perfect.

I hope yours is an easy fix.

Oil can dry out.  I'd spray some CRC QD Contact Cleaner along both ends of the motor, then run it for a few minutes.  It dries quickly and then you can lube the motor bearings, where the shafts penetrate the motor mounts.

Put a tiny drop of oil on the motor bearings and the worm bearings on the top of the truck gear towers.

Hi bruce22

Sounds like it's time for a clean and re lube.

Oil and grease can dry out and grease harden over time.

If it has been sitting around doing nothing for any length of time and was OK before that its a good bet that a clean and lube will fix the problem.

Be very sparing on the lube model trains don't need a lot and can be ruined by to much lube

regards John
