If you're talking about the WM caboose painted all red, not the red/white/black one, then I recommend Tamiya Dull Red TS-33.

I have one of those cabooses and I really like the color.  I tried Scalecoat PRR Caboose Red and I thought it was too purple.  I'm not trying to model the WM, I just liked that color and the Tamiya was the best match.  It's only available in spray cans.

Thanks Kevin, didn't consider the number of colors Vallejo has.

I only have six of the ten or so in the model colour line. There are another three or four in the Game Colour line.

Game Colour "Bloody Red" is the most true bright red in the entire line I think.

Scalecoat makes a decent caboose red.

Thanks Kevin, didn't consider the number of colors Vallejo has. Now lets see how fast some on-line hobby supplier can mail me some of these.

I have Vallejo and MicroMark reds but they look either too brown or orange on my test car.

I don't know which Vallejo Red you tried, but here is my selection of reds from "orangy" to "brownish", maybe this will help you select the best colour to try.

From left to right: 909 Vermillion, 817 Scarlet, 957 Flat Red, 908 Carmine Red, 926 Red, and 982 Cavalry Brown (Red-Leg Red).

Trying to remove the existing lettering but everything i've tried has also removed the paint...

While I usually have very good success matching paint colours, once the factory paint starts coming off while removing lettering, I find it much easier to simply strip the model completely.
I can then re-paint it in whatever colour I want, whether matching a prototype or freelancing.

Trying to remove the existing lettering but everything i've tried has also removed the paint; they must have used some very permanent inkNo. So its either match paint or totally repaint.  I have Vallejo and MicroMark reds but they look either too brown or orange on my test car.  Just hoping someone has already done this to save a lot of mixing and frustration.

They are currently Cent of NJ, Western Maryland and Pittsburg and West Virginia and all appear to be the same shade of red.

I have found red to be one of the easiest colors to match. There are very few shades that we interpret as red. It turns to purple, brown, orange, or pink with adding only a small amount of additional colour.

If you have access to a hobby shop with a good selection of paints by Vallejo, AK-Interactive, or Citadel, you should find a match very easily.

When you say "renumber", are you looking to paint another caboose to match and decal, are you going to paint a red patch on to apply decals over, or are you doing some touch-up after the renumbering?

I have several Proto 2000 Northeastern style cabooses and there were a handful of paint schemes that included red.  Which road name are you trying to match?

That's a good question. I don't have a Proto 2000 caboose, but according to this chart, http://www.microscale.com/Floquil%20Color%20Chart.pdf Model Masters makes something that might be a match. But, without having one of these models myself, I can only guess. Maybe someone else will have a better idea of what might work for this project.

What paint matches proto 2000 northeastern caboose red? Trying to re-letter several.
