I scratchbuilt a pair of modern flatcars and plan to paint one for Conrail and the other for the Burlington Northern. I need to paint them with rattle cans because I don't own an airbrush. I would prefer to use "model" paints rather than the stuff found at HD and Lowes (they put out too much paint, and it is thicker).
However, my hobby stores are closed so I am not sure what would be good matches for CR brown and BN green. It can be Testors paint, Tamiya military paint, or any other line of paints as long as the colors are close. Can anyone recommend a specific rattle can paint for me for these two colors so that I can order them online?

You can order direct from Walthers. Scalecoat makes both spray cans and bottle paints; the Walthers filter does not have a 'spray can' select on the filter, so you will have to search the list

First thing is to find the color equivalent to bn green and cr brown in each line of paint. Then see if that color tone is in rattle can form. Some paints brush on giving a nice clean finish as well.

I can't do that without going to the hobby store. That is the essence of my question. Has someone else found the correct colors.
If You trust Floquil's version of what the specific color version of the Railroads is(which,including Myself,many people have over the yrs.) then here is a Floquil color chart PDF for different paint mfgers making that same color, just a different name........most are dead on, some very close. Spray/Brush:

Really? I've been lookiing for many years and I don't believe that I've ever seen any paint sold as Conrail Brown. Blue, yes. Brown, no. In Conrail's early years the cars looked more like a maroon to me. I've been told that was because they had a lot of EL maroon hanging around.
In the Hearld King decal catalogs they had a bunch of suggested paint mixes. For Conrail maroon there was a mixture of Floquil colors. One of those colors got discontinued, and then the entire Floquil line got discontinued.
Currently the ScaleCoat 2 line of paint has three variations of, I think, tuscan red. One of those may be close to the Conrail color.

Yes there are. (Actually 7) I believe that he is looking for something called CONRAIL red. Not ATSF red; not EL red; not tuscan red; not boxcar red; not any of the other reds. He wants CONRAIL red. And that, as far as I can see, is not listed.

Matches my Conrail boxcars pretty well.
You can get a good quality air brush from Harbor Freight for under $20 last I checked. I paid 14.99 for mine on sale, its a clone of a Paschee and has worked great for years. I have painted everything from brass to plastic trains. I mostly use Modelflex acrylic paint along with another brand of acrylic enamel. Easier clean up than oil based and not as smelly. I used the disposable cans of air at first till I found a good deal on a compressor. Both are well worth the $$ as its a one time purchase and you will use them for many many years. The finish you get from an air brush is far better than even from rattle cans designed for models. Been there....done that....not going back. Mike the Aspie

i saw tru color paint is coming out with rattle can versions of thier paints.
That will be interesting to see how well that one lays down compared to an air brush. Every rattle can I have tried so far cannot lay down a fine enough coat to not obsure details. When I have backed off enough to get a very fine coat it gives a grainy/sandy finish. Especially when painting brass diesel shells. If tru color does BN cascade in a rattle can, I might have to give that a try just as an experiment.
