Good Morning All,

Back to 14F this morning after yesterdays 24 at the same time. Still messing with the freight house for the layout.

Ken, glad you are following up with the VA. Blood clots can be serious. Won't go any further on the meds thing as it'll all just get erased.

I'm glad you can still go over the Hoover Dam. It truely is an engineering marvel as is the new bridge.

Still jammed up in the shop so in I go.   Ciao, J.R.

At this point I don't know how worried I should be! I know blood clots is a big deal and can cause stroke's and death. But how likely is it?

You don't have to go with the expensive designer drug the Dr. recommends, simple generic warfarin also works.  It's YOUR choice, not the doctors.

The risk is high.  If the blood clot breaks off it goes to your lungs, called a pulmonary embolism.   A little clot might not cause any symptoms, a bigger clot will cause shortness of breath and chest pain.  The biggest clots plug off the blood flow to your lungs and at that point there is nothing doctors can do, even if you are in the hospital.

Warfarin is a lot harder to manage, what you eat can affect how it works, it interacts with certain drugs and there is a lot of indivdual variablility so you need frequent blood tests.

Can you get drugs from the VA?

I've been on wafarin for about 4 years, on-again-off-again afib.  I eat what I want, when I want, and the dosage is set to my diet.

I go to a "coumadin clinic" for a finger stick about every 40 or 50 days.  My INR stays between 2 and 3, with 2.4 being the norm.

My first cardioligist tried to talk me into Xarelto.  No way.  Warfarin is easily conterreacted with vitamin K if there is ever a serious accident with bleeding, there is no counter drug for the designer drugs, you and the emergency responders are helpless.

I'm also on Medicare, so that might make a difference, as far as cost.

My life time health insurance, including Medicare supplements, comes from the Cement Finishers Union.  That also makes a big difference in what I co-pay.

I sold my Mustang yesterday.

.

I had it for a couple of years and only put 1,000 miles on it.

.

I was offered $1,000.00 more than it cost me to own (purchase + tax + insurance + gas), so I could not say no.

.

Now I have no excuse not to get down to work and finish the house remodel. Plenty of cash in the bank... time to get going and get a train room.

I hate to rub it in (that's usually Brent's job) but here in Ontario, if you are 65 or older and without a drug plan, you pay $100.00 per year and everything else is covered by the government.

I'm over 65.  I buy drug insurance for under $150 per year, and virtually every prescription I get is free.  My wife's expensive drug, normally $350 per month, which has no generic yet, costs about $30 per month with the insurance.

Bad New's I have 2 Blood Clot's in my right calf! I have had leg cramp's on and off in the right calf on and off but I never thought about blood clots!

Hope the doctors help.  Is this related to your diabetes?

After my heart issues a year and a half ago, I was put on Plavix (Clopidigrel) and Eliquis (Apixiban) plus a bunch of other stuff.  These are both blood thinners.  I reduced my Eliquis by half and now no longer have the spontaneous bleeding issues I was having a year ago.

I've also got diabetes, which I manage well with diet and one med, plus exercise.

I notice that doctors seem to preferentially prescribe the expensive drugs that advertise on TV, rather than older meds that are cheaper and generic.  For example, I was put on the expensive drug Entresto.  After researching it, I realized that it was mostly just a very expensive blood pressure med, plus a diuretic that kept me from sleeping.  After discussing it with my cardiologist, I was able to substitute a much cheaper generic.

Blood clots can also be carried to the brain, where they may cause a stroke.  You've got to get that under control.

A few days before my 34th birthday, this is exactly what happened to me. I can´t remember what really happened, then. All I remember is that I was on my way home. I had been feeling kind of awkward all day long and I was just entering the highway when it happened. All I remember is that I woke up a day later, with a doctor bending over me welcoming me back to earth. She told me that I must have stopped the car on the entrance lane and made an emergency call. I had the car phone installed only a week before. It saved my life. In August this year, I will celebrate my 30th anniversary of being born again - the first time around. There were two more occasions, the last one two (or was it alrewady three?) years ago.

Happy times!

Howdy ....

Steven NWP SWP ..... Happy birthday.

Ken ... Regrding expensive medications, I suggest you look for rebate programs and also prescription insurance which can signifcantly reduce your costs. Medicare Part D helps if you qualify. I hope your clot clears.

Everybody ......... Have a good day.

I am going to Indiana next month, but due to weather and work requirements, I doubt I will be able to contribute very much.

I understand North Dakota also has a huge subway system about 150 miles southwest of Minot.

It's like the Sirrius radio station I listen to in the morning. The announcer insists she is broadcasting for the Unnergroun Garage. And they can't pronounce Ger edge correctly either. Whistling

Good Afternoon,

Cloudy today but a warm -6C. The heat wave continues.

Ken, hope all works out well. Medications these days can do wonders.

Well I finally have my brass K5a running on the test track. I put it together yesterday and it wouldn't run. So off with the boiler again and it ran fine. I did put some Kapton tape on the top of the motor in case it was touching the boiler after raising the motor up a little to get the drive to work better. I put the boiler on again and now it runs on the track. It does run a whole lot better than it did when I got it and is very quiet now but it still has a slight hesitation going forward a low speed. Perhaps it will smooth out with some running time . I have decided not to put in a decoder but will run it on my layout on DC. My loco service area is isolated electrically via a switch as I don't like the racket all the sound locos make when you fire up the layout. Therefore I can hook up a power pack either by just disconnecting the DCC unit or I might install a double pole double throw switch. I think I have one somewhere.

I have an Intermountain boxcar kit sitting on the bench and think I'll put it together. They go together nicely and have great detail.

Time for a coffee.

Aw... C'mon guys...  You obviously didn't raise your kids on Sesame Street did you.  Or at least didn't get to sit and watch it with them... LaughLaughWhistling  Fargo North, Decoder was an ongoing sketch that was on "Electric Company", a show basically from the same people as Sesame Street but for slightly older kids.  Came on right after Sesame Street.  Personally I love puns so I loved to see those sketches back when my kids were preschool and in primary school...

 Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gang and I Beer please and Dirk half a dog treat.

Steven Happy B-Day and many more!

VA visit Over all it was a pretty good one. I do not have the blood markers for blood clots. Seems it is coming from sitting to much mainly at work. I do like to cross my legs, I have got to stop that habit. My Cholesterol was pretty much perfect at good 50 / 60 not good. I have been battling my GL level for the the last few months. Last year I was a A1C 5.3 level, this year 6.0 which is still good but I rather be back in the low 5's again.

Looks like I can get the blood thinner from the VA. While they cannot tell me the cost I can get it. They only want me on for 3 months at this point.

Later, Ken breathing a tad easier again and Dirk say's Daddy I want to go for a walk Woof Woof!

Ken good news.  If you don't have a clot, you don't need thinner.

Mario Andretti's son died of colon cancer at age 56.  Get your colonoscopies ladies and gentlemen.

The Nascar show had Ric Flair's daughter Charlotte on, who is also a wrestler.  I was a wrestling fan back in the 60's with Bruno Sanmartino and Argentino Apollo.  She was quite attactive, though I think there was some surgical enhancements.  That's got to be hard on your body even if it is fake.

We slept in the guest bedroom last night because the painter had everything moved to the center of the room covered in plastic.  The dog kept head butting the master bedroom door because that is where he sleeps.

As I started this post, an ice cube fell out of the ice maker and hit the floor.  I just went over to pick it up before it melted and I can't find it anywhere.  Stinkin poltergeists Devil

Good Morning All,

12 hours without a post. Guess we're less gabby than we used to be. 17F this morning but not windy so not too bad. Got a late start to the shop as I had to stop at one of the machine shops we use to drop stuff off. Finishing suspension stuff off than onto the wiring harnesses for two cars.   Ciao, J.R.

Good morning .... Coffee and a donut, please.

JR ... Yes, the Diner is quiet this morning. Where is everybody ?

Steve O asked where we are going for February. ..... How about Wisconsin ? We can spend the month pestering Steve O. Whistling and have some good tasting Wisconsin cheese along with other good food.

CN Charlie.... Good to read you have your brass loco working. I know what you mean about sound decoders all working at the same time when you turn power on to the layout.

Ken ... Glad to hear your good report from the VA.

Everybody ..... Happy Model Railroading.

Minot North dakota.

Why not Minot?  That's what they say there.

I'll tell you why not,  I've been there two times and had a bad experience twice.  For this Northern boy,  I'm all done with that placeLaugh

It's always good to get back home again.

We had a really good reflection of the Sun Set down there one night.  It looked like the mountains were on fire.  It only happened one evening at dusk and only lasted about two minutes.

In this view it almost looked like molten lava.

On the last day there we took the river taxi up and down the Colorado River to visit the other resorts.

A mallard duck adopted our River Taxi Driver about two years ago.  He finds her everyday and jumps aboard her boat.  He moves to the front of the bow when it's time for the passengers to get off.

Now Judy wants a pet duckLaugh  I told her good luck with thatSmile, Wink & Grin

Happy Belated Birthday Steven.

Ken,  glad to hear your blood clot scare was only a scareYes

Have a good day all.
