At the holidays, I do an elaborate winter mid-century modern HO layout under the tree.
I have two cats, and the challenge is to get as much scenery up as quickly as possible, so they don't assume that the bare white cotton blanket is a new bed.
Every morning when I get up, it is not unusual for me to find on the floor a snow-covered pine tree or telegraph pole that had been used as a cat toy overnight.
But here is what I found this morning: Everything was in order, just the way it had been left, except that my B&O F3 locomotive, which had been parked in the back against the sliding glass door, was knocked over on its side - but not a single bare tree, pine tree, or telegraph pole had been disturbed in the process.
So how did my cats manage to do this? At this point, I think it is less about finding a toy to play with while I'm sleeping than it is to just mess with my head.

I can just imagine what kitty is thinking. "I wish you would finish the engine facility. I need to use the ash pit."
I had a cat that would occasionally get on the model railroad. I learned the trick was just let him get bored and down on his own. He never 'batted' at anything and would soon get down. He did less damage that way than if I tried to 'hurry' him. When hurried, he wouldn't step as carefully, knocking things over.

We haven't had a cat in the house for a few years now. When we did, I used to tie the tree with guy wires, back to the picture window frame it stood in front of.
Learned that one the hard way.
Maybe think about setting up a trail cam.

That's why I keep my tree in my office where I can close the door, and Casey Jones and Smokey can't get to it. Years ago when it was Casey and my first cat Chessie, I initially didn't put safety latches on my overhead cupboards in the kitchen. One evening, I came home from work, and a heavy glass 2-cup measuring cup was laying on its side on the counter below the cupboard it had been in. The door to the cupboard was closed, and the measuring cup had been behind plates and other items that were undisturbed. They can be quite sneaky about how they get into trouble.

It is nothing special by most standards: White snow blankets, plastic telegraph poles, snow covered pines, bare trees made from wire, and buildings from Faller, Kibri, and Plasticville.
Still, I think I have a good eye for picking out the best structures. I just got the Plasticville TV station.

No Christmas layout this year, but the cats behaved with the tree.

This is my youngest daughter with her terrible cat.

The only redeaming quality this cat has is her ability NOT to break anything.
She could jump from the floor to my workbench, jump to the filing cabinets covered with fragile models, and then to the top of the wall cabinets without touching a single model. It was incredible how deft she was at moving around all the models.
She never damaged or displaced anything.
But, she is still the worst cat ever.
By the way, what do you think of her DGLE tree? I love it!

Years ago when I was a teenager (don't ask how long- I'm not answering) I had a layout that was suspended from the ceiling in the garage by a winch. Our two cats managed to get up on it constantly............ A mystery to this day.
