Is On30 being modeled much anymore?
Posted by trwroute on Wednesday, December 25, 2019 11:34 AM

I've been following the On30 project railroad on MRVP, but I really don't see On30 anywhere else.  I like the size of it, but I just don't see the enthusiasm in it like there was 10 - 20 years ago.  I have noticed that the Bachmann stuff has risen drastically in pricing, if you can find it.

I am considering building a narrow gauge layout, but I might have to go back down in size if I decide to do this.

I am sure On30 has its fair share of followers, but they don´t hang out in this predominantly HO scale oriented forum. There are other places, dedicated to narrow gauge model railroading.

Happy times!

very much alive but not much on this site and not all vendors carry it. Peco has really gone for it track wise.

My new Christmas/Holiday Seasons train will be On30.  I've had the train for years, just never done anything with it.

Now that my HO Christmas trains has been sorta kinda retired, I want to move on the something new.

My Holiday train has been On30 for more than 20 years. And I know several very active On30 modelers.

Bachmann continues to release new items, and re-run new versions of previous items.

Is On30 growing as a segment of the hobby? Well I suspect it has found its following and has leveled off. New modelers likely equal any attrition, and they tend to travel in their own circles.......

I have noticed that the Bachmann stuff has risen drastically in pricing, if you can find it.

Of course one can always use HO trucks and locomotive mechanisms with scratchbuilt bodies to keep the cost down.

I think On30 like other narrow gauge has a following, but not a large one.

While you can get tighter curves with narrow gauge, you are still using O scale structures which take up a lot of space.

But I confess to liking On30 and have collected a fair amount over the years.  A future project for me is to convert some of it to S scale.

I left HO modelling around five years ago and now model Victorian narrow gauge in On30. It is a narrow field of availability of items to run but I have sufficient locos and rolling stock to satisfy me. One thing it does is to revive your scratch building skills again if you want to model specific infrastructure. I use a mixture of Haskell NA locomotives and some Bachmann Shays and climaxes for the branch. I also enjoy the research aspect and luckily there is still one VR narrow gauge railway line in use that being the tourist 'Puffing Billy' railway near Melbourne. It was hard to jump across to this new scale but now I am enjoying it, and also make new hobby friends along the way.
