Rivarossi UP FEF-3 Parts
Posted by ColoradoPacific on Friday, December 13, 2019 10:09 PM

Hey all, new member here! I have an HO scale Rivarossi Union Pacific FEF-3 in the Overland/Excursion Gray and Yellow scheme that I'm attempting to restore to it's former glory. It has some damage to the smokebox door and smoke deflectors.

I have already reached out to Hornby and got the "We don't have any Rivarossi parts in hand" email back. I was wondering if anyone here would have a direction for me to go in to get this beauty restored?

Any help is definitely appreciated! Thank you!

Hi! Welcome to the forums!

Unfortunatly, that model was made a long time ago, and if the manufacurer doesen't have any, it'll be tough to find any new parts.

Your best bet is to find a used part on Ebay, if your lucky. Otherwise, you can buy a used engine on Ebay, swap the parts, then sell it off. That's how I've been aquiring parts for many of my long discontinued engines.

Hope this helps!

Charles

Remember there's always the option to make new pieces or repair the damage.  Looks to me as if just burnishing the edges of the deflectors will go much of the way toward fixing them, and only slight additional work to 'restore' them.  Smokebox (at least in the picture) appears only slightly dented, and straightening the bell bracket and making matching numberboards shouldn't be hard.  I don't see much, if any, denting damage that couldn't be fixed largely with putty and filing/sanding followed by airbrush repainting.

There are plenty of people on here who can help you do the necessary things, and the results of further work can either resemble 'new old stock' or be arbitrarily close to true finescale.

It would be a labor of love rather than a financial enhancement to collector value, but I think that's your spirit in the first place.

Welcome to the Forums! I don't have this particular model, but I have repaired damaged locos and rolling stock before. From what I can see in the photo, it looks like the smoke deflector could be fixed by either blending in a filler putty, or you could cut the damaged area out so there would be a square notch in the deflector, and splice in a piece of .010" or .020" sheet styrene. As I said, I don't have this model, so I don't know the exact thickness. As for the smokebox, I believe the same techniques would be effective. Just remove the bell and smokebox front, cut out the damaged areas, and splice in some sheet styrene. Then just touch up the paint. Tru-color paint makes a UP Harbour Mist Grey, (TCP-025) and the smokebox looks like either a graphite or gunmetal color. Or, if you prefer new parts you can check on sites like Ebay for the pieces themselves or a junker unit that you can scavenge for parts. Hope this helps.
