MisterBeasley I made this about 10 years ago, using an on-board video camera to show my subways, which are mostly below ground and not visible. More modern cameras can record the image directly, but this was transmitted to a TV and recorded there, leaving me with a lot of dropouts and hiccups to edit out. This does have "Take the A-Train" as the background music.

Wow that's fantastic. Anytime you can work Duke Ellington into a model railroad post you're on solid ground. Nicely done. Love the power cables hanging on the side of the tunnels. Just like the real deal.

angelob6660What about videos of modern accuracy or 70s-90s modeling? When you watch it half the locomotives and freight cars didn't exist yet on the era that their modeling.
Such things bug me for years and still does to a point but,I also realize its their hobby. I smile and enjoy the video since there's a lot of time invovled uploading a video.
If the chatter is for operation I don't mind it since it puts you in "I am there" frame of mind. I immediately mute any music.

I guess Xboxtravis's reply was deleted, probably because of the reference to a 4 letter word.
I was going to respond to it. as it is a video of Rob Spangler's "cab ride" around his layout.
Oh well, never mind.

That bothers me also, with the chatter. But the cutter I can mute, unless it inaccurate train consist I turn it off.

I agree Ken Karlewicz is one of the best modelers I have ever seen. (it helps that he models the D&H. )
I really like the weathering and car selection on this one. (really replicates the "paper train")

It's about time for me to make a new layout tour video for my layout...

I've posted this before, but sometimes YouTube does not do what I ask.

SeeYou190What I don't like is layout videos that are posted on YouTube that are not put there by the layout builder.
I diagree. There are people with real videography skills that take the time to edit and put out a product that's a real layout tour. CNLVN and TSG Multimedia are two that I watch.
Its the out of focus, lurching camera work that is my pet peeve.
The video above by Ken Karlewicz...there's a lot he could teach us. How did he get his water that relective?

Actually this is the finest modeling I have ever seen....wish there was more to see of layout. I can completely relate to this modeler as it was the same experiences that steered me into this hobby in addition to having a serious train nut for a dad, and two uncles who ran steam. If only he lived in the D&H steam era.....wow, what he could have done!
Folks, this is a free presentation and I feel that unless there is something positive or constructive to comment on or your work is as good, I'd be quiet as will I. This guy is in John Allen's class although a much different locale and period.

I agree. The link that Wayne provided is a very well done "story", and nicely narrated by the author.
I think what the OP is talking about is the backround chatter, laughing, etc., by those that are in the same room, whether they are operators or visitors.
On one of the videos of a train on my layout, you could here a basketball game, on the radio, in the backround. I deleted the video and made a different one, with the radio off.
A far as show us your work, I don't have any of that in video, but I have lots of pictures.
Most of the layout update videos I've tried to watch, the author is just rambling on, going too deep into detail on the obvious, with no thought of organization.
I don't make it through those.
Mark Pruit's video updates are very well done.
Maybe I should have been a teacher. "Show your work" So many of these layout visit videos and photo shoots show nothing but equisite work, looks awesome, almost fooled me into thinking it was real. Then you look at the photo locations on the track plan and they are all clustered in a few areas - ah - the few areas that actually are 'finished' to that level. Well, what about the rest? Show your work! Give us scenerey challenged folks at least a chance to think we might be able to turn the bare plywood into that finished scene. Even the most detailed layout in history started with bare wood at some point!
They used to show this all the time in the older magazines. Finished shots, but always some shots of areas that were under construction, or an overall shot with the beaming layout owner standing by his layout. Showing just the fully finished stuff is like if a cooking show only showed you the final plated version of the dish and not how it was prepared.

SeeYou190Videos posted by the builder are usually carefully made to show off his talent and the layout, which is very likely his pride & joy.
And thus you only see the high points of his layout whereas a visitor videos the complete layout good or bad.
IMHO the chatter of the operators puts you in the "I was there" perspective.
bruce22I find these most interesting and enjoyable, however , overheard background conversations detract from the viewing.

Videos posted by the builder are usually carefully made to show off his talent and the layout, which is very likely his pride & joy.
Videos posted by casual visitors usually make the layout look poorly.
This is one of the reasons why I have never allow visitors to take videos or pictures of my home layouts. Likewise, I never take pictures of home layouts I visit.

Why don't you just shut off the sound and watch the video?

Wayne,
Thanks for that link. He's definitely an artist with his camera and his layout and modeling. His talking really defines his ideas and how he captured them on his D&H. Great weathering on everything.
Personally, his talking wasn't bothersome as it was key to the video. I agree with the OP and I believe he's talking about having several operators in the background talking about any and everything which detracts from those type videos.
The only thing about this video I found annoying is the awful piano music. For some reason that type of piano affects me like finger nails drug across a chalk board! LOL
Thanks, again for sharing that with us.

I haven't seen too many of them, but this one has some of the nicest modelling I've seen. The chat is mostly the builder explaining his reasons and methods as an artist. The modelling is stunningly well-done.You may not enjoy the talk, but I think that it explains a lot of the reasons that the modelling is so outstanding. The use of photo backdrops is the best that I've ever seen...it's difficult to tell where the modelling ends and the backdrop takes over.
Wayne
I agree.
