The really inexpensive ones all require extensive setup, a very steep learning curve, or don't support Mac ( an issue for me, but not for many others). After lots of searching and reading reviews, I settled on Flux's Beamo. From all the reviews it seems to do what I want it to do for the hobby and the business ( light use in both). I had been saving for this a while so I bit and will receive the machine in March. In the meantime I am busy on the web researching tips, tricks and techniques that are common to laser cutters and engravers in general.
I have not used one for model railroading, but I did use one a bunch for model airplanes. I really like using it. Typically the engravers can also cut. They made very accurate and clean cuts. Probably saved me weeks of work. The main issue I've seen is the price tag. The one I used was very nice (i.e. expensive) so I do not know how the quality suffers if you buy a less expensive unit.

When you check out the link, you'll see some comments that discuss various problematic plastics. PVC and carbonates are to be avoided entirely. Styrene has significant issues (mainly excessive smoke and melted edges), but it isn't deadly; just uncomfortable to breathe, even with a mask and a decent filtration system. Stick with the acrylics.

I plan on getting a laser engraver in the new year. I think it will align well with my model railroading, and with my small business as a maritime woodcarver. Are any of you involved in this yet, and what tips do you think a beginner should consider?
