maybe the MRC 1812 with an 12mm x 8mm x 6mm sugar cube or an 10mm 8ohm round speaker?

Yes I too read about that. The guy who posted their achevment on here years ago, obvously dont like the MRC 1812. He is using the ESU LokSound Select Direct Micro. Thing is these decoders can be pricey. The MRC 1812 sound quality is not that great and only soulution to this is dropping a sugar cube into it(this is a great option without breaking the bank). Bottom line is all of this will take some soldering and modification of somewhat. I was wonder if the SDN144A0 from digitrax will fit? Maybe modification of the frame or adding contact wires to the frame. Once I am finnished moving I will start on this.
The MRC 1812 decoder fits with no problem in the GP15-1.
They are a hit or miss but MRC is good at replacing them.
Have bought three and two were bad. Takes about a week to get a new one.
Sound great though.

Sorry Newbie here I not only made it dificult to reply at first. Thanks again Steven Otte! But I also forgot to mention that this is the N scale version
I see in an earlier post 2015. That someone sucessfully put an MRC 1812 sound decoder in a GP15-1. With a little modification. The MRC decoder is for an GP35. This tells me that the GP35 & Gp15-1 frames are similar in size. Just wondering if anyone tried putting the digitrax sdn144a0 in the GP35? If so let me know what modifications, if any are expected.
Cheers!
