Has anyone modeled the EMD SD49 or the SD59. The MKT GP39-2 likes a good starting point. Gary
The SD49 was on EMD's book but,none was purchase. The SD59 is better known as the SD59mx EMD's newest remanufactured locomotive. The base unit was EMD SD60Ms. U.P is the only buyer so far their numbers are 9900-9924.
As far as modeling the SD59mx I have no idea where to start.The flaired grill would be a challenge.
As far as the SD49 I would start with a SD50 and add a Farr air filter like the SD38 has.

If the OP wishes to build a SD49, it is important to note that no such locomotive was ever built. As a result the loco will be freelanced not only in terms of the fact that exists but also a lot of the locomotive’s details. It is important to note that EMD’s SD50, calatogued at the same time as the SD49, had the new style of dynamic brakes with the dynamic brake equipment in a compartment behind the cab (not in a blister in the middle of the long hood). I suspect the SD49 would also have this as all EMD SD series models did this from the SD50 up until the SD70MACs (SD70ACe/M-2 and SD80/90s have the dynamic brakes at the far rear). For this reason and SD39-2 or any pre SD50 locomotive would not work as a starting point.
Now the frame you would use would also be interesting. The SD50 used a lengthen frame compared to all the -2 series SDs, so I would guess that an SD49 would also. This would likely be needed to accommodate the new style dynamic brakes. But would the smaller (12 cylinder vs 16) engine of the ‘49 series locos allow use of the shorter SD40-2 style frame even with the new dynamics?
These are just thing the OP will need to consider to build a model of an SD49 considering the fact that there is no specific prototype. Somewhere plans for the loco may be available to answer some of these questions.

I don't know anything about what the SD49 would have been, but the SD59MX (Union Pacific's name for the EMD SD32ECO) is a rebuilt SD60M. Here's a Wikipedia page with more information if you decide to model it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_SD32ECO
The SD49 is not the same as the UP SD59MX which is a rebuild. The SD49 would have built on the same frame as the SD50 and a more modern version would more like CP SD30ECO. Gary

I presume a SD49 would look something like a SD50 frame and everything sitting on that from the dynamic brake forward matching an SD50, and everything from the inertial filter area back matching a non-dynamic equipped GP49 (or phase III GP39-2). Of course, that's just a basic first-level guess, I don't know how well the lengths all work out, and as others have mentioned since none of the prototype were ever build there's not really a definitive right answer.
Well, I think one of you guys should have it, and build one, or at best, your interpretation of one. No one else has.
