hey all. Time for the best thread of the week: weekend photo fun. This is where we show off our projects on our workbench. Here's mine:
anyone in the Pittsburgh area, or along the Wheeling and Lake Erie mainline will recognize this:
Its a former CHIT (CHTT)4 bay hopper. the Wheeling bought a couple dozen of these towards the beginning iirc, with the 3bay hoppers taking over the Coke trains post 2008. These ones are still used on the Coke trains, but now its a mix of both.
Lets see what everyone else is working on
(My Model Railroad, My Rules)
These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway. As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).
Good morning from sunny and warm Northeast Ohio!
Thanks for starting us out Jimmy, we have missed you the last few weeks, keep up the good modeling.
Only managed to get one car finished this week.
Kadee 50' HF60 PS1 Boxcar Kit, painted with Scalecoat II ATSF Red and Black Paints, the lettered with Highball Graphics decals. Car was a 1962 purchase that was upgraded in 1971 with the new BAR Paint Scheme removing the Red, White and Blue State of Maine Products lettering with a new logo showing the coastline, mountains and wood products. This car was used in moving paper products from the mills in Maine across the country.
A picture I took last week at the Strongsville Club of my Atlas RS-32's that i detailed to match NYC unit pictures. Hauling a mixed freight on the lower level mainline.
Thanks for looking!

Rule 1: This is my railroad.
Rule 2: I make the rules.
Rule 3: Illuminating discussion of prototype history, equipment and operating practices is always welcome, but in the event of visitor-perceived anacronisms, detail descrepancies or operating errors, consult RULE 1!
Thanks Jimmy for starting off WPF. Thats a good looking hopper.
Rick - Nice boxcar. Love the RS-32s. I have a pair of the Atlas models too.
Now that the new Black River Station is complete, I've started on replacing the Redwing Flour Mill. Actually, I'm going to make an attempt to re purpose the building. temporary name is Shockers Electric.
At the start, though the lighting isn't right.

Sorry about that double post. Don't know how I did that.
Another trip down memory lane.
The layout still exists - tucked away in the attic collecting dust.
Happy times!

I got done painting a locomotive for a friend of mine. He really wanted a Zebra Striped RS-3 for Santa Fe. It is an Atlas Yellow-Box Kato drive that was undecorated. I also added an NCE decoder and LED lights and some detail parts. I got rid of the molded on grab irons and installed wire ones.
Here it is.

That's one sweet RS3. The zebra stripe scheme really makes it pop!

Thanks for initiating this cool thread for this week. I'm enjoying the many impressive examples of everyone's work.
For me, I hereby announce that, after several years of procrastination (I really enjoyed converting DC locos to sound), I have today finally started to complete my formerly rough scenery. While understanding that generally I will add ballast last, I decided to (a) start with the upper portion of my layout and (b) start with the relatively simple task of ballasting the upper yard. I am adding AZ Rock & Mineral steam era HO yard mix #1222 here. The yard is on N scale flat roadbed thickness. I can see that I will have a fair amount of work ahead!
Here is the yard and what I added today (it is still drying, and will warrant some 2nd pass tweaking).

Here is an updated shot of my experiment board, with some turf, foliage, bushes added to spots on the board and a variety of items sampled on the dual track.

I'm glad I acquired a variety of items years ago for experimenting with my grandson's modest layout, plus planning ahead for mine. It meant I did not have to go through the search & ordering process as I have a variety of scenery items on hand.
Do enjoy your weekend, everyone!

Modeling HO with a transition era UP bent
Jimmy, Thanks for starting the WPF with an interesting hopper car.
Rick, The BAR is an eyecatcher.
Allan, Nice chop job.
Ulrich, Good memories, I especially like the seaside scene with catenary wire.
Renegade1, Yipes stripes, good looking roadswitcher.
Paul, The AZ ballast really brings the trackwork to life.
Thanks to all the contributors and viewers. Have a good weekend and regards, Peter
Excellent contributions again this weekend, folks!
Thanks for getting the thread started, Jimmy

BRVRR Sorry about that double post. Don't know how I did that.
Don't worry about it Allan it happens.
You're all good in the hood
As always, very nice looking stuff this weekend guys. I always enjoy looking at everyone's work.
I wish I had more time to model and post some things but it's been a really busy summer, seemed like about 4 days. Winter is coming sooner than I think, unfortunately.
When you start hearing the crickets cricketing during the day, you know it's coming soon. It hasn't quite got to that point yet but it's coming
The plus side, I always have more time available to model in the winter.
Looking good guys
TF

113 actual. The heat index fluctuation these days.
Hot is hot. Actually sometimes winter is not so bad, you can put on as much as you want but you can only take so much off.
Still I have to say, nice looking modeling guys, I wish I had something to post.
Jimmy: Nice to see you back. Thank you for opening Weekend Photo Fun. The hopper car looks well used, I like the weathering. It would look great with some scenery.
Rick: That BANGOR AND AROOSTOOK car is beautiful in bright red. I love that herald.
Allan: Nice work rekitting, refitting, and unkitting the Red Wing Milling company kit.
Ulirich: Memory Lane is a nice place to visit.
Renegade: That SANTA FE RS-3 is gorgeous. That is a difficult paint scheme for sure. Adding the free standing grab irons makes it look even better. A+ job.
Peter: Nice tug boats. I don't think I have seen that model of yours before.
Ed: You might inspire me to purchase some of those bargain brass passenger cars.
Track Fiddler: Yes, Winter is Coming... Oh no... wait... I live in South Florida, winter never comes down here...never mind.
Mel: That is HOT! We have not been touching 100 here in Florida. It has been fairly mild.
.
I was in Atlanta all last week, so no freight car modeling. I have spent a few hours in the garage this weekend working on the water on my layout segment design test section.
There might be an update coming today over in the Layout Building thread.
Thanks to all that have shared.

Living the dream.
Love the weekly photos Gents. Well done.
I wondered how you poured the resin to fill up the legs and arms. Are these silicone molds? What are the alignment nubs made out of?

I was looking for the flip symbol for you but they did not have one just kidding Kevin. Sometimes I ask myself a dozen times a year why I live in Minnesota?
I do have something to post. An HO model that I thought was so impressive I could not resist buying it even though I model N scale.
I have some time this afternoon. This model is appreciated by me. I tried to buy it but my Railroad Club friend would not think of taking money from me and gave it to me as a gift.
I see some things that need to be finished. I also am looking forward to doing some more extensive weathering to it. I don't know who came up with that nuclear orange signage but that has to go too.
I will start on it today and hopefully I have some updates for next Weekend's Photo Fun.
PS. Those castings are really cool Mel. Thanks for sharing. I want to learn how to do that
Nice models this week.
As dicussed earlier, I need some " ground" buildings around my FOS wharf in N scale.
I started wednesday to make sketches, plan and building this future marine motors repairs, unnamed until now.
The central building is a laser kit by Branchline Trains Laser Art named county feed in N scale.
I build the main building of this laser kit a few years ago but never finished it and painted it.
County feed is now the center building of this huge factory.
All the added structures are scratch from Northearsten wood board and Evergreen board and profiles.
The stone foundation is made from Vollmer styrene board of heavy stone wall ; they are very realistic and good to use in N scale; I have used a lot of them for my layout.
As usual, my design include an arrangement of numerous different height and roofs which give a very eyes catching building.
More on the layout building community about the Fos wharf construction in N scale if interested.
On the run whith my Maclau River RR in Nscale

RR_Mel Sorry Guys I got carried away
I loved it all. Get carried away any time you want.
Well, been awhile since I posted anything on these weekly updates, so I figured I should pop one. This is an Atlas GP38 that my customer wanted done in the scheme of the Mt Hood Dinner Train. I found a source that could do me a special decal run for this scheme and matched up various Trucolor paints to come as close as possible for the colors on the prototype unit.
Mel All I have to say is I always have my mind wide open and I'm always willing to learn.
This molding stuff you're doing is really cool. I know I will fumble with it a little bit and not be on your level for quite a while but that's what makes this stuff so fun. The Learning Experience
Thanks TF
