I will be going to SLC for the NMRA convention. Other than Trainlife in Provo, are there any other model train shops or hobby shops with good model train depts there?
You already mentioned Trainlife/ExactRail; the other big one I visit often is The Train Shoppe in Salt Lake City. Trainlife and Train Shoppe are my two personal favorites since they are focused 100% on trains. Trainlife has a very warehouse type set up, with lots of stock from a lot of the modern brands (ExactRail the house brand, Rapido, ScaleTrains, Athearn Genesis, etc. all in HO or N); the Train Shoppe is a bit more broad with a focus on Bachmann, Athearn, Atlas etc. in multiple scales (HO, N, O 3-rail, G). MRS Hobby in the Draper area and the Hobby Stop in Orem also carry model train products, but its been a few years since I lasted visited MRS and I have never been to Hobby Stop so I can't comment on their selection. I'll point out a few local railfan attractions to visit. Promontory Summit, Ogden and Heber all got a lot of attention during the earlier May wave of railfans; but don't forget to come out to some of the smaller locally known musuems and sites like the Tooele Valley Museum (my hometown museum), the Western Mining Museum or the Brigham City Depot. Or spend a day railfanning out on the former LA&SL routes to experience Utah's 'high desert' at its best. Echo Canyon would probably be fun right now, especially with the Big Boy crowds now in the past! I keep adding things onto this list, but try and snag a tour of the copper pit with the new Rio Tinto Kennecott Visitors Center open now. Formerly rail served, its a dump truck operation now but still worth a visit to see up close in person.
The Train Shoppe in Salt Lake City is worth a visit. I stopped in when I was out west a few weeks ago. A lot of fun, and the game room in the back is something you will not see anywhere else.

A large portion of that game room is actually closed right now for some modifications during the summer months, I have no clue if it is going to be open again before the national show.
Huh....and for YEARS now, due to the lack of Utah listed MR shops in Model Railroader Magazine, I thought there weren't any! I've stayed in Ogden and operated on marvelous layouts in the SLC area but didn't even look due to the lack of ads. :-(

Capt. Grimek listed MR shops in Model Railroader Magazine
There are at least a half dozen great model railroad hobby shops I know of that are not listed in the Model Railroader Dealer Directory.
This seems like a bad decision to me. I travel all the time for work, and being listed in Model Railroader is the most likely way to get me into your shop.
