Athearn Maxi III Well Car Coupler Replacement
Posted by ATSFGuy on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 4:48 PM

I have three sets of brand new Athearn Maxi III 5 Unit Well cars lettered for TTX that were released last year. Upon running all three sets in of our club shows, I discovered that one set had a bad shelf coupler on it, causing the set to uncouple everytime a dip or bad rail was passed over. I checked Kadee's website and it appears to have been redesigned thus the old coupler charts are now gone.

Does anyone have these Athearn cars? They are the current releases. If so what number or replacement shelf kadee's do I use for them?

I never knew well cars used shelf couplers.  So if one well car with two containers tips over, they all do. ?  Just like tank cars.? Confused

I'll try those

yes, the new Athearn Maxi III Well cars now come with shelf couplers instead of standard Kadees. Not sure why they did this.

I'll have tp pay attention next time I watch one go by, I see enough of them on the CN.

Is the OP certain that these coupler are shelf couplers and that they are Kadees. According to the Athearn website the cars are equiped with McHenry scale couplers.

McHenry is Athearn version of the knuckle coupler that is made out of brown plastic and looks similar to a Kadee scale coupler, except it is brown, plastic, and has a slightly different style of wiskers.

Every Athearn car I have seen made in the last 15 years has had such couplers, in all the Roundhouse, RTR, and Genesis lines. I have never seen a shelf version of the McHenry coupler.

In my experience a standard Kadee #5, #148 whisker, or #158 scale couplers all work fine in Athearn coupler boxes with out need for modification. Of course, I have never done any well cars...
