I missed something, too. Kevin mentioned using additive manufacturing to produce a whole new gear. No glue involved. Or did I misunderstand?

James gears look pretty smooth, which is not what I usually see in 3D printing for model railroaders.  I don't know how a 3D gear would hold up.  There is 3D and there is 3D.  When I was in Durango, the railroad was talking about working with the University to design 3D replacement parts.

I also recall a youtube video from a small MR manufacturer that claimed that 3D rolling stock bodies, literally fell apart after time.

I thought, maybe incorrectly, that the gears were delrin, which is why glue doesn't work.

For instance, something like these:

Perhaps Greenway Products may have something you could use?

Hopefully a Shapeways file will exist soon to print out our own new gears for these locomotives.

Dr Wayne figured out a fix

If you google Proto 2000 0-8-0 cracked gears, you will find other threads on this forum about taking it apart.

HELP Proto 2000 0-8-0 Cracked Axle Gear Replacement
Posted by Trainman440 on Saturday, June 8, 2019 1:50 PM

Hi all, unlucky AGAIN on Ebay...this time, a Proto 2000 0-8-0 with a cracked axle gear. I can't return the item, because when I bought it, the engine ran with a small cracked gear, and now the gear has split in half entirely.

Any way I can find a Proto 2000 plastic axle gear??? NWSL seems to not have one, neither does Ebay.

PS turns out, ALL 4 wheels have cracked axles. However, those seem to be somewhat fixable.
