Weekend GE's, lets see your GE power
Posted by emdmike on Saturday, June 1, 2019 8:47 PM

Here is my sole, for the moment, GE unit.  Just arrived on my railway.  NYS&W GE 8-40B #4008 (OMI/Ajin).  Factory custom painted with MV lenses. I did remove the front MV's to install a Richmond Controls lighting circuit with forward headlights only with working Prime beacon light. I hope to find road number 4006 in the near future.   Leading is Alco C430 #3000, also from OMI/Ajin.       Lets see your GE units!      Mike the Aspie

And a pair of Genesis Amtrak units I love listening to. The thump of the 7FDL16's four-stroke exhaust and whoop of the compressor is pretty neat!

Carry on with more GE!

Cheers, Ed

Looks great Ed, the initial "whoop" is the electric motor spinning up to speed, then the electric clutch engages and you get the high speed chug of the actual compressor.  My wife's late father worked for GE at Erie, PA and I worked for the sub contractor that produced the etch name plates in the cabs and the decals/paint masks for the body. I did the delivery work so I got to see the inner workings of many GE models, including the Dash 8, 9 and Genesis units that went to Via Rail.  There were several of the older Super 7 series sitting in the bone yard as well.  Several of those got sent overseas.   Mike the Aspie

That's neat, Mike. I too worked for GE but I made tungsten wire in Cleveland.

I had a tour of the Locomotive Works back in, maybe 1996 or so. Oh, if those walls could talk!

I painted this brass 44 Tonner for a customer at a hobbyshop I frequented...

...and did three of these Athearn U-Boats for myself...

...each with two Mashimi motors...

...and each weighing 33oz....

...they were pretty decent pullers.

Northern Pacific 2807, an N scale GE U28C made by Arnold, waits for a passing frieght to enter the siding so it can proceed down the line in a scene staged on a folding table with sectional track in what current consists of my 'layout', plus a few, cheap scenery items.

This is the first time I've ever tried to photograph, and I must say I have renewed respect for those that do. Getting the right lighting and clear picture took several tries! Also sorry for the blurryness, my phone is quite old and has a terrible camera!

For those who are curious this picture accually contains my entire N scale fleet. In addition to the U28C, my only N scale loco at the moment, I also have the four Micro Trains pictured, an NP caboose, a CNW 50' gon, and a 50' and 40' boxcar, in GTW and PGE respectively.

Regards, Isaac

Looks good Issac, keep up the good work.  Yes, model photography is a trial and error, especially with an older camara phone.  I hope to get much more scenery done on my little 4x8 layout this year.  Very little is done as I plan to upgrade to Kato Unitrak(HO scale) to replace my old Atlas "Snap" track.  The only track to remain will be my girder bridges as Kato has yet to offer anything in HO.   I used to have a brass N scale diesel in my collection.  It now resides with a local N scale guy on his layout.     Mike the Aspie

When I worked for the sub contractor, the first project was doing the decal layout for the 25 Via Rail P42 diesels and delivering those to the plant.  I have several of those decals in my collection that were going to the dumpster(had minor flaws), then we did Heritage 2 BNSF Pumpkins, CP rail units with the beaver logo, CSX Y2k scheme(all paint masks at that time/non reflective), lots of UP units starting with the AC45ACCTE with the flag scheme.  You should have seen the size of the color printer we had to make those huge flags(they are in 3 sections).  The wings on the nose and the UP shields are silk screen printed. Most all of the metal labels in the cab we also made, and I have a few of those that were scraps.  It was a fun job, just didn't pay that well or have benefits.  But getting to see entire Dash 9 locos get lifted up and moved several tracks down to mate to thier trucks like we pick up a model, was impressive every time I saw it.  The head manager of the paint shop gave me several builders photos that are framed in my train room.     Mike the Aspie

I was trying to concentrate on transition era UP power but found I have violated that in both directions.  On the newer side, having liked a couple of Kato RS-2's, I decided to try these Kato C44-9W's.  They are converted to DCC and I really like the locos and the sound quality (given limitation of HO scale, of course).  The video (posted 3 yrs ago also) is not great, including lack of maintaining focus (2010 Canon G12) as well as my expedited speed to demo the locos with sound.  I have since added a GE C30-7.

Everyone knows what I am going to post...but I am just so proud of it!

I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.

These are my GEs:

Two 44 tonners, one in old paint and the other in new

A 70 tonner

U-18B and a U25B

All started as undecorated kits. They span a timeframe on MEC and B&M from late 1940s to the early 1980s; after that everything went into Guilford grey
